car starting problem
car starting problem
i was using search to find an answer but couldn't find a similar problem.. so here's my problem
went to start my car today (2000 gxe auto). i turned the key and it made a _slight_ noise and went dead. i thought it was the battery so i changed it, but still no go.. All the electronics don't work (even remote entry), and no sounds either (not even that annoying beeping sound when your door is open and the key is in). the only thing that works is a dim lcd light in the dash.
i got no idea what to do, going to clean battery connections right now to see if that's it. alternator? any suggestions?
thanks!

Re: car starting problem
I had a similiar problem, only when I was having starting problems, everything was fine once the engine started.
I would turn the key, and the engine would crank for about 1-2 secs, make an aweful grinding/crunching noise, then start cranking again for 10-15 secs before finally starting.
Since I was out of warranty, I took it to a mechanic and had a new (genuine Nissan) starter put in. Problem solved.
Until about 4 months later, when it started doing the exact same thing. So I took it back to the mechanic, and he put a new starter in (so he claimed) under warranty.
Now the car was even harder to start. It would continue to make aweful noises as it was cranking.
So I got smart and took it to the dealer. They had it over a week, installed a new ECU, checked all the electrical connections, compared voltage readings with another 2000 Maxima off the lot. They finally, in talking with Nissan Tech, found that the problem was corrosion between the engine and transaxle causing intermittent ground faults. So they pulled the engine, cleaned the corrosion, and the car has started without a hickup since.
If you are completely without power, there could be a complete loss of continutity between the engine and trans. I dont know the specifics, but I believe the current flows from the battery, to the starter, to the alternator and through the engine to the transaxle and back to the battery.
Something to investigate anyway.
By the way, the bill came to over $1200. Of which they charged me about $200, and the rest to the powertrain warranty.

thanks everyone
Thanks everyone who replied, i really apreciate it.
i got the problem fixed after cleaning the connection of the battery a couple of times and reconnecting
i guess i overstressed about nothing. probably a car dumbass like me should check under the hood more often
