more tire research.....weight

I know it's been talked about.....
but anyone know some of the lightest tires around?
I know about Pirelli P7000, and the Toyo (ts-1?...
but any other?? Does the weight even matter? should i even care?

Check out survey in tirerack...and the best high-perform all season is er......Potenza?????? Isn't that the stock tires? cause I REALLY don't like them.

So suggestions anyone? or should i get, as the survey suggested under ultra high perform all-season..

#1 Michelin pilot sports
#2 Sumitomo HTR+
#3 BFGoodrich g-force
...............god forbid

It is the Potenza RE950s that got good reviews, not the stock RE92s that come on our cars. The 950s are phenomenal. I can't say anything bad about them at all.

even more confusing............

never thought the tire/wheels combo can be so freaking difficult.
hours after hours on the net....it's telling me something different all the time.

So...first off, 18" allseason tires is harder to find, I'm in a small canadian town.go figure. NO nitto in canada..even after good reviews.

someone tells me 18inch wheels=less power..wtf?

I assume if i can get the rims+tires the same weight as 17", nothing changes? BUT..another say.....18" rims are heavier (of course) but the tires as well because low profile needs stronger material/bonds to get better strength.

ok...can some one support this??

So now what? don't change the rims and only the tires? gee...maybe now i can afford the michelin pilot sports...and it's hands down the best...agree?

Phew!

let me help you ease your confusion

OEM 17" Maxima rims = Heavy (roughly 26lbs.)
18" depending on brand will range from 15lbs. to 30+ (chrome, etc)

Now, say you get an 18" that's also 26lbs., having this rim alone will make your car slightly slower than a similarly weighted OEM rim primarily due to the bigger size (rotational force/inertia (?))

If you get 18's that are lighter then you help balance out the factors.

As far as lower profile tires, it is true. If you get lower profile of bigger sizes it will tend to weight just a tad bit heavier as it needs more rubber in the sidewalls to help carry the load. But not more so. And unlike rims, the difference between weights won't be as much and varied.

Yep!!! You said it!!! I spent hours and hours on the net trying to decide which wheels/tires I wanted. Someone once said that 17" wheels is a good compromise between looks, ride, & performance. After spending that much time surfing and researching I came to the same conclustion!! My personal best advice is to get the lightest, best looking 17" wheels you can buy and then buy the best handling tires you can find...I didn't worry about tire weight. Also, by getting 17" wheels it will open up many different brands and sizes of tires for you to choose from.

Yeah.....i think i'll stick with 17 inch..
finding all-season tires that size is near impossible...not to say $$$!!!!
