Does anybody have this problem

When you shift into neutral or drive does it make a metal clanking noise and shake the car alot? this randomly started happening yesterday, does anybody know what the problem could be?

auto? I have seen/heard this on my auto.
can it be the timing chain?

Where is the clanking sound coming from: engine, transmission, etc?

If auto, check your fluid level. Also, maybe the engine mounts are bad and the engine is rocking back and forth excessively. I had this problem on one of my older cars. New mounts fixed it.

I get a clunking noise if the car is on a hill and I put it in drive or reverse. It's kind of rough, too, but it is fine otherwise. Do you hear this on a flat surface?
