I love the Maxima's split folding rear seat

I was able to carry a small ladder with the trunk closed. I have discovered that the G35 does not have folding seats, only a small pass-through. Let's see you get a ladder through that pass-through. Anyone else love the split folding rear seat feature?

I would like it more if the opening was actually a rectangle instead of the funky shape it is, but yes, it is handy sometimes. What is also handy is if you have a large square box (too tall to close the trunk lid on)...I fold the rear seats down and use the 'back of the backs' as a package shelf. That way nothing has to sit on the leather seats and you can tuck towels, etc. (which I keep a few of in the truck anyway, just for this) around packages to keep them from shifting.

I was really upset the other day because I was going to buy a shelf at Ikea but the pass through was 1 inch too small to fit the box. I don't know why Nissan decided to make the whole so small and such a strange shape. They should have made it rectangular in shape.

I had a Mazda 626 before this. The opening was WAY bigger on that car. I can't fit anything through the Maxima one.

But the 626 was a piece of crap.......

It is a bit smaller than my Integra... I've had problems fitting shelves and other furniture items from IKEA too, but luckily it fit across the back seat. It does fit my snowboard nicely though!

Exactly, even for a 626 which I previously had, the opening was much much bigger!

I think the extra metal acts as a rear strut tower support, it connects the two towers ,and more metal, may mean more support... just my guess

I've loaded a ton of stuff from Ikea including the tall CD tower that they sell. Also in 2K2 they added a locking feature!!

I think the 2k and 2k1 has locking features too, a little lever on each set on the back side... I've loaded a futon in it once and also moved with all my stuff in the trunk, back seat, and front seat, and the car still flew... that's what I like about v6 engines... more power.

Yup, the lock feature takes up space too.

My 2K1 also has the slider on the back of each rear seat which allows the rear seatbacks to be locked.

I guess Infiniti assumed that the G35 driver won't need to haul anything because he will be so busy flinging the car around corners and blasting thru the straights. Bad decision in my opinion.

On the 2k2 you actually lock it with your main (black) key from inside the cabin.

I thought all 5th gens were the same?

All 5th gens the same? I wouldn't say so, 2002 has HIDs, brake assist, other cool stuff, I rather have a 2002 because it has cooler stuff on it, bigger engine, 6 speed, definitely not the same. Well, not exactly the same.
Heck I wanted the AE when that came out, and I'll probably want the 2003 TE too, and the 2004 and so on, can't have everything. I'll just keep my 2000 it's good.

They changed some stuff on the 2001, and 2002 they made more changes, guess the key is easier and not easily disabled or unlocked... but I'm sure you can still open it from the trunk, inside that is, just in case you or some unsuspecting person gets stuffed, oops, I meant get locked in there...

I hate to say it but my 89 civic is a better cargo carrier than my Max. The pass through openning on the Max is too small for anything other than skis or snowboards. When I got my bike it came in a box that wouldn't fix in the max but fit like a charm in my Civic. I guess that's the price you have to pay for a stiffer rear end but it's annoying nonetheless.

Don't complain guys! All of yours has a larger opening than mine. I have seat back on the drivers side that won't even come down. I have tried and tried but it won't unlatch. Guess it's back to the dealer.

soopermax02,

I tried turning the lock but it wouldn't turn. I assume you are talking about the slotted plastic cap? It is turned the opposite way the other side is that opens but I can't turn it even with a screwdriver.

a screwdriver won't work (unless you're intent of destroying it). Use the main key (black) to open it. The Valet key won't work either.

but is the seatback fully latched...I mean so the lock mechanism (if that is the issue) is fully engaged, rather than possibly jammed part way?

I guess the G35 has gone the luxury route also.
