2003 3rd gear noise
2003 3rd gear noise
I've got a 2003 6spd with about 600 miles. Lately, when i'm shifting from 2nd to 3rd, there's a slight grinding feel to the shifter. So I tried shifting from 2nd to 3rd a few times, when coasting, and making sure my clutch was depressed all the way to the floor. Every so often, the shifter would make that grinding feel. It seems to happen when the shifter is not going in straight to 3rd gear, but when it's a little off center as it's going in. BUT, when the car is stopped and the clutch is depressed all the way and I shift back and forth from 2nd to 3rd, the grinding feel doesn't happen. All the other gears are OK. Any ideas? BTW, I have to admit that i'm a new stick driver.

Hmmnnn...does anyone know if Getrag had
anything to do with the Maxes's 6-speed transmission design? I ask that only because that extreme notchiness (almost an crunch) is normal, standard behavior for a Getrag six-speed...every BMW 540 six-speed I ever drove (mine included) would do that on occasion -specially during mid-RPM, casual shifting.

With all of the 6spd drivers in the ORG, I'm sure we can conclude one way or another if its normal/design. Come on y'all - were's your input... Clunk going into 3rd - or not ?
On my 2k2 6spd, my 3rd gear also clunks or grinds a bit, in the beggining I thought it was me, since I had just started driving stick, but then it kept doing it...it does it most when shifting at high rpms tho, 4500 and up...HELP!
It bothers me so much, specially when racing or pushing it...it makes me feel like stopping and slowing down...

ha this is great!! i have had this problem since i bought my car! got a new tranny and WHOOPS it still does it! its going in on monday to get "fixed". i heard that the 2k3s were gettin a more beefed up tranny but from the sounds of it they got the same ones as the 2k2s enjoy it only gets worse from here. now when i down shift it grinds the hell out of 3rd!

I kind of hope that mine gets to the point of having to replace the tranny - I'd like to see if I can pay the difference and get the HLSD... Whatcha think about that possibility?
If not, I pray that I never have to replace it...

bottom line is this trans is a piece of crap. It ruins the car for me, everything else is pretty good. This would be an excellent car if not for it.

i have the same problem in my car... although it only occurs when the car is running cold. it may be the transmission fluid because once the car gets warmed up, the shifts are buttery smooth
im switching to redline mt-90 within the next week, i'll tell you if the third gear gets any better which shifting cold.

well now that people have started to notice this i will tell u new guys something. the internals on our 6 speed is the exact same as or little cousin sentra se-r spec-v. does that sound right to u guys? 175hp with however much torque maybe 180ish (correct me if i am wrong please). while we have a 255hp eninge with 250ish torque. So a 4 cyclinder tranny on a 6 cylinder car......... doent make me happy. peeps like me that have alot of mods to thier cars and have raised the numbers alot! i have 230fwhp with 236fwtq which calculates to a whole lot at the flywheel. prob around 270-280ish which is well over the sentras torque. the reason i make a big point out of torque is bc anyone that knows enough about cars knows that torque will rip a tranny apart. so in our case we get screwed and the sentra gets a over built tranny. they under built the max and over built the sentra. sorry for blabing but this really has gotten on my nerves!!

I don't notice any sort of 'grinding' during casual shifting from 2nd to 3rd. I do have Redline in the tranny, however, but I can't remember any grinding before that. The tranny has gotten much smoother over the miles. I don't think it's ever going to be good let alone great in it's action, but I've learned to adjust my driving to the way it wants me to drive.

As far as the grind going into 3rd, mine went away once we hit about 1000 miles. The shifter is still notchy, but no more grinding. Didn't change the transmission oil either.Yeah it isn't slick like the honda trannys, but I find w/ a little finesse it shifts fine. It definitely isn't a tranny that likes to be jammed into gear.
