Quick Question: My Steering Wheel Vibrates at high speeds.

for some odd reason, when going 55-60+ on the highway, i can sense a slight vibration from the steering wheel. now, i do know my rotors are shot (wheel shakes when i brake), but can bad rotors affect a vehicle even though the brakes are not being used?

also, my steering wheel feels looser than normal. i mean, it feels okay, but it doesn't feel as solid as the day i took delivery of the car.

if anyone could give me some advise, i just want to be armed with info when i take the car to the dealer.

Note: does the dealer handle rotor work, or do i have to find an outsourced mechanic?

Fully stock giving you vibrations.....hmm did you curb your rims? Vibrations at that speed ussually mean balancing problems. Problem is can you isolate it? If you feel it in the steering wheel its probably your fronts. Find an infinity dealer and take your car there to get it balanced. The infinity dealers all have the "best" balancing machines. Looser steering hmm don't know about that one, maybe you could check your pressure thats my best guess.
As far as rotor work, I don't know how many miles you have, but the warranty goes out on fixing that from the dealer after so many miles. I can't remember the exact amount. Do a search for rotors and you should be able to find it fairly quickly.

Very simple solution...get a 4 wheel alignment and tire rotation...you'll be all set!

I've had the same vibration since I bought my car. I've tried everything (rotating, balancing, constant tire pressure monitoring) but to no avail. I believe it to be the tires.

I thought maxima's don't need 4 wheel alignments?

Yes, bad rotors can indeed cause this

shimmy, just as bad tires (out of round, out of balance) and bent rims can. This was exactly the case on my wife's Taurus wagon -cured by replacing the lousy (and twice-turned) OEM rotors with some better units from NAPA.
Dont waste money on rebalancing tires, etc until you've fixed those rotors.....

Couple of 'odd' questions...

how long does this last (I mean 10 minutes into a drive (possible 'flat spot' from sitting overnight or longer) or the whole time)?

which tires are you running and how much mileage is on them? what is the air pressure?

have the tires ever experienced a hard panic stop (yes I know there is ABSD, but there is still some abrading of the tire tread that can occur...with the possible result of a 'flat spot' having developed)....slim chance, but hey...

this in no way is discounting the rotor issue, just giving other possibilities as well...

Vibration

1. Unbalanced wheels
2. Worped rotors
3. If you have aftermarket wheels, put hub-rings on
4. and last but not least, your rim(s) might be bent.

I bet one of these is your problem.
Good luck.

1.) do Nissan Dealers do warped rotor resurfacing, or do i have to bring it to a specialist?

2.) will they keep my vehicle overnight, and if so, do i get a rental? (how does that process work)

thanks gents for all the replies. if anything other ideas come up lemme know.

My rotors worped after 12K miles. I hassled with the dealer about the Brake Judder TSB, and they resurfaced the rotors, and even threw in new pads too. It took them an hour or two, while i waited.
Good luck.

Mine vibrates too

My 2001 se has had a high speed 65++ vibration since I drove it home from the dealer. The dealer turned the rotors last week under warranty at 20K but referred me to a bridgestone dealer for tire service. The dealer ended up replacing one front tire (it only cost me $25). The car still vibrates. I believe its the tires. Stock tires suck. I don't know why nissan couldn't have put better tires on these cars. My next stop is to a ford dealer near my house with one of those new Hunter balancing machines.

Dealer didn't even bother resurfacing the rotors, just ordered new ones at the expense of the Nissan. And no they don't keep it over night, but it will take a few hours.
