Saw new Max and...
Went to the Nissan stealer yesterday and saw the '04 Max for the first time. I have to say that I don't like it at all. It looks bulkier than my '03 and not sporty at all whatsoever. Suddenly, while I was looking at the car, a salesman shows up with a customer inquiring about it. The customer asked me if I liked the car. And you can all guess what my answer was. Well, the salesman gave me a dirty look like get the h*ll outta here. So I went back to the stealer today for warranty service and the new Max was still there. I guess the customer went for an '03 instead.

The whole purpose, IMO, of having only 2 trim levels on the '04 is for those who either want a near-luxury car (SL) or a bmw-like sport sedan at a lesser price (SE), so it's all a matter of preference
But if you want a sporty ride from your '04 Max, you're better off w/ the SE since it has 18" rims w/ high-performance tires, a sport suspension, an optional 6-speed manual, and even an optional 2-seater setup in the rear c/o the Elite Pkg.
However I think the option pkg.'s are still a bit screwy because they require you to get another option pkg. if you want one certain pkg., and I still can't get over that ridiculous "Skyview" roof. Had I liked the '04 Max a lot more, yes I'd get one, w/ a regular sunroof insread of that stupid Skyview roof that Nissan wasted all thier resources on, but the '03 is going at a steal so I'd take the lest of an '03 fully loaded at a great deal.
