My 2004 6 speed test drive.

There it was, a Maroon 2004 6 speed.

I had to drive it and after doing so I found that it handled far better than the 2003. The ride quality was also improved, quite a bit.
Also noted was the feeling of immediate torque that I hadn't noticed as much in the 2003.

I came away very impressed with how it drove, performed, and surprisingly, how it looked! They look MUCH better in person than in the pictures I had seen.

I even considered buying it, before coming to my senses.

How would you compare the pickup to your GTP?

They are very different cars. The Nissan is obviously much more refined, smooth and it is a 6 speed.

My GTP isn't as refined, but it definitely goes and corners well.

If I was given the choice between the new 2004 GTP and the 2004 Maxima, I would most likely choose the Maxima, but I haven't driven the new GTP yet, so I can't say for sure. The availability of a 6 speed is a major factor.

As far as equpiment goes, My GTP has everything the Maxima has, plus H.U.D. That said the Maxima interior is much nicer. I have sat in a new GTP though, and the interior on the 04 is very nice as well, but Nissan still edges it out.

As for the power, my GTP feels a little stronger, especially on the bottom end, but I do have the u-bend and resonator removed, replaced with a straight pipe. Stock, it feels close, but I give the GTP a slight edge.

I am not a big fan of the GTP's interior, or the interior of any of the Pontiac's for that matter... reminds me too much of my old '89 Grand Prix SE... GM and Ford really need to get some new interior parts in the factory part bin...

I think the '04 GTP has reliquished the big straight-line accel. lead it established in 1997 plus the gap today is wider with interior appearance and a key feature like navigation. On the other hand it looks like GM's renaissance is happening top-down with the Vettes and their big SUVs and now GM is talking about a 500 hp 6.0L CTSv to supercede the 5.7L 400 hp CTSv.
