02/03 Auto Vs. 04 Auto
I am starting this thread b/c the other 03 vs 04 thread was locked b/c everyone started killing everyone...this is what happened when I took my wife's 02 (Frankencar Intake) and went head to head with my buddy at the Nissan dealership in an 04. This is a cut and paste job from another thread I posted in:
"The magazines are claiming it's slow, but I took my wife's 02 Auto
(14.5 in the 1/4 mile) and ran along side the sales person in the
04 while we both were on our Nextels, and while we were both in 3rd
My wifes car pulled the 04 by one car length when it automatically downshifted into 2nd, but then when the upshift to 3rd happened the 04 lost no more ground up to 105 or so...so as for being slow, I would not call it that at all."
To shine more light on this description...we were both side by side and the new 04 only had 150 miles on it so it was tight, while my wife's car has about 20K on the odometer so it's in its prime. We were both on our cellphones like I said and both in 3rd gear...at 50 mph even we both counted to three and hit WOT...as I said, my wife's car downshifts automatically into 2nd and all the way up till it goes back into 3rd it pulled the 04 by about 1 car length, which considering the 04 was still virgin new and 100% stock vs. my wife's car being all broken in with the Frankencar...I would say they would have been dead even...now from 0-100 I would have no idea...but the new 04 is definitely not slow by any stretch of the imagination...which is great news for everyone...I hope!
Rock On!

Because the new 04s do nothing for me I didn't do any research past driving the SE...I would NEVER own any kind of Max other than an SE so as far as the SL I am lucky I even knew it replaced the GLE. In any case, the car was an SE so it was apples to apples modelwise. As for the salesguy ripping the car...it was their demo model...not just some car some poor guy/girl was going to pay full retail for the next day...if you follow me.
The point I was trying to make in any case, is that the new 04 "SE" is plenty fast and anyone ripping on it for being too overweight and slow may be very surprised when they run one. I hope that makes some 04 owners a little more happy with their purchase.

The 04 only lost by a car length...from 50 up till just over 100 mph...in all fairness to the sales guy, he only did this once and even during breakin you are supposed to vary between different throttle positions including WOT...so it wasn't like the car was beat on time after time. My whole point is that the 04, at least from these highway speeds, is very, very respectable.
