Heat Inside The Car

I've got a 2004 Maxima that I'm not real happy with. There is a lot of heat coming from underneath the dash. A portion of the plastic vent piping on the right side of the console is hot to the touch even with the heater off (even with the A/C on!). The dealer is giving me some bull story saying that nothing is wrong. But the heat is very unconfortable and you just can't drive this car around with the A/C off. I like to ride around with the windows down and enjoy nature, but I can't on this car. It is especially bad if the sunroof is open and the windows are up.

Anybody else experiencing the same problem?

My 02 Altima does the same thing...it almost feels like heat coming through the floor from the exhaust, but the floor itself is not warm to the touch...its just hot air.

My Altima has heat outlets under the front seats that blow rearward...with the right windows open I think it channels air under the front seats and pushes air toward my feet, making me very uncomfortable at times. The only thing wrong with this theory is that the air coming out of those vents should be the same as every other vent in the car...although now that I think about it maybe the air gets heated up by the exhaust.

Dunno, but it ****es me off. Dealer says nothing is broken so they can't fix it. Curse them and their by the book attitude...I need an old fashioned grease monkey mechanic.

There is some black plastic behind the center console and under the dash - is your's warm to the touch when you are driving?

It's not a warm airflow issue - the heat is just radiating from under the dash from the venting piping.

What it sounds like is hot coolant is still flowing through the heater core yet with the blower fan off the heat would just "emanate" like a hot water radiator in an old house...

Not sure if Nissan still uses them but in the past their was actually a valve in the heater hoses/coolant lines that would either re-route or shut-off the flow of hot coolant to the heater core. This would facilitate the rest of the cooling section of the system in keeping the heat out of the car.... Sounds like hot coolant is still flowing in your Max.. That could be normal,,, I really don't know.
Could their be an issue with the "dual climate" system where half is off and the other is trying to heat up the area??

I was a Nissan Mechanic but back in the 82-90 timeframe... Many "things" have definitely changed to say the least...

My 04 SE doesn't have a sunroof but I drive it with the windows down with just the fan blowing outside air-no a/c... Never noticed any abnormal heat??

Keep fighting for resolution.

Part 2...

Drove around today with the windows down and the a/c-heater controls completely off. Only light lit on a/c controls was that of the "outside air" vs "recirculate" button. I felt around a lot and had nothing but cool outside air temps from center under dash area, both sides - no heat what so ever.

My guess is you have the controls set inadvertently to something you don't want, or their is an issue with the "valving" in the heater operation. My experience tells me most of the functions of the heater/ac system operate by use of engine vacuum (and electrical of course) with numerous valves, actuators, and devices. All it would take is one or so to stick or malfunction and you could end up with what you are describing. Keep pestering the dealer and call customer service immediately, over and over.... But be professional.

If yours is normal then us that don't have "radiant heat" must have the real issues..... We should pull in behind you at the dealer and demand to know why ours are different - see if "normal" applies to both.... :-)

Keep us posted - i'm sure someone else will learn or use info from your warranty "saga"...

well i havent even drove in the car but the problem was this, the climate control would be on 62 and the air would be cold then turn it to 63 and it would be real hot air blowing out and the inside of the car would get much hotter than the 63 it was supposed to be maintaining. I believe are problems are different but just wanted to let you know anyway also if the dealer says it is normal ask to warm up a 04 and compare.
