Anybody had these problems with the 04'?

Ok, here it is... the few problems that I've had with my 04'

1) First I cannot get my gas mileage over 20mpg no matter what I do. It is averaging around 16mpg with very steady driving and no flooring. Highway vs City driving is the same result.

2) Second My FM radio has very poor reception with stations that should come in clearly (and did so in my 97 max and my 2000 max) now get static reception.

3) My XM radio locks up every so often and goes out, simply jumping back and forth between saying "LOADING" and the channel name... will not start working again until I restart the car.

4) WHen viewing the name of a channel or the artist/title only the first 8 or 10 letters appear although there is an entire freakin line available. Does everybody elses only show the first 8 or 10? I thought that other XM radios in autos showed the entire name or the artist or title.

Dealer says that they can look into it but before they start loosening all the cars bolts I want to know if anybody else has seen this, or if it is unusual.

Thanks

I can't say I've had any of the radio issues; also, our mileage averages around 20-23. My wife is the daily driver of the 04 and she does mostly in-town trips. On the highway, I've gotten about 26. srm

I am getting 25-27, but 90% of my miles are on the highway. I haven't had any of the other issues that you have listed.

I don't know about the radio, but 16 mpg is not what you should be getting. Either you must be driving in downtown Atlanta, or there is a hole in your gas tank.

Kidding about the hole; you would smell gas if there was a leak.

I would top off the tank, then take a trip of at least a hundred miles (preferably longer) on an unclogged freeway, being careful not to do much hard accellerating, then top off the tank again, being careful the car is on a level surface for both fillups.

If this trip gives you less than 20 MPG (I would actually expect to get 24 to 27 MPG), something is not right. Are you absolutely positive the transmission is going into top gear? Have you felt any slipping in the transmission? Maybe something is blocking the air flow thru the air filter, or the ignition timing could either be off, or some component of the computer that controls the engine performance is not right.

As you can see, I am just guessing. But you don't want to get 16 MPG for the life of this car. Let the dealer know something is out of kilter, and something has to be done.

As I am awaiting for my Maxima being built in Tennessee, the 2004 owner's manual page 4-19 and 4-20 should stated the following (did not write this):

RADIO

Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position and press the power on switch to turn the radio on. If you listen to the radio with the engine not running, the key should be turned to the ACC position. Radio reception is affected by station signal strength, distance from radio transmitter, buildings, bridges, mountains and other external influences. Intermittent changes in reception quality normally are caused by these external influences. Using a cellular phone in or near the vehicle may influence radio reception quality. Radio reception Your NISSAN radio system is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic circuits to enhance radio reception. These circuits are designed to extend reception range, and to enhance the quality of that reception. However there are some general characteristics of both FM and AM radio signals that can affect radio reception quality in a moving vehicle, even when the finest equipment is used. These characteristics are completely normal in a given reception area, and do not indicate any malfunction in your NISSAN radio system. Reception conditions will constantly change because of vehicle movement. Buildings, terrain, signal distance and interference from other vehicles can work against ideal reception. Described below are some of the factors that can affect your radio reception.

FM RADIO RECEPTION

Range: FM range is normally limited to 25 - 30 miles (40 - 48 km), with monaural (single channel) FM having slightly more range than stereo FM. External influences may sometimes interfere with FM station reception even if the FM station is within 25 miles (40 km). The strength of the FM signal is directly related to the distance between the transmitter and receiver. FM signals follow a line-of-sight path, exhibiting many of the same characteristics as light. For example they will reflect off objects. Fade and drift: As your vehicle moves away from a station transmitter, the signals will tend to fade and/or drift. Static and flutter: During signal interference from buildings, large hills or due to antenna position (usually in conjunction with increased distance from the station transmitter) static or flutter can be heard. This can be reduced by adjusting the treble control to reduce treble response. Multipath reception: Because of the reflective characteristics of FM signals, direct and reflected signals reach the receiver at the same time. The signals may cancel each other, resulting in momentary flutter or loss of sound.

AM RADIO RECEPTION

AM signals, because of their low frequency, can bend around objects and skip along the ground. In addition, the signals can be bounced off the ionosphere and bent back to earth. Because of these characteristics, AM signals are also subject to interference as they travel from transmitter to receiver. Fading: Occurs while the vehicle is passing through freeway underpasses or in areas with many tall buildings. It can also occur for several seconds during ionospheric turbulence even in areas where no oobstacles exist. Static: Caused by thunderstorms, electrical power lines, electric signs and even traffic lights.

SATELLITE RADIO RECEPTION

When the satellite radio is first installed or the battery has been replaced, the satellite radio may not work properly. This is not a malfunction. Wait more than 10 minutes with satellite radio ON and the vehicle outside of any metal or large building for satellite radio to receive all of the necessary data. No satellite radio reception is available and NO SAT will be displayed when the SAT button is pressed unless optional satellite receiver and antenna were factory installed (late availability only/retrofit unavailable), and an XM or SIRIUS satellite radio service subscription is active. Satellite radio performance may be effected if cargo carried on the roof blocks the satellite radio signal. If possible, do not put cargo over the satellite antenna.

At least 90% of my driving is on city streets and the worst mileage I've gotten is in the 20-21 range. I tend to be a bit of a leadfoot plus I'm still in my breakin period so I think 20 is about the worst you should get. I notice that when I do drive on the highway in 6th gear with the cruise control on, my instantaneous gas mileage is at the top of the scale (30+ mpg).

Mileage on New Maxima

When I last filled up my new Silver Maxima (6-speed), the total mileage on the car was 1,364. I'm about ready to fill her up again. I've noticed that the computer tells me a different mileage reading than what I calculate the average mileage was for each tank of gas (city driving unless noted otherwise):

TANK____MILES___COMPUTER___CALCULATED__TYPE DRIVING
First_____518_____19.0 mpg_____21.9 mpg____little highway
Second___365_____20.9 mpg_____26.1 mpg____some highway
Third_____240_____22.1 mpg_____25.9 mpg____some highway
Fourth____240_____22.1 mpg_____23.7 mpg____little highway

I should also note that the first tank (dealer supplied) was all premium gasoline. After that, each tank has been regular gasoline. I don't have an engine knock problem, and the car is very peppy. I can't tell the difference (driving the car) between premium and regular (other than the savings of 20 cents per gallon).

In another week, I'll be gone for 6 weeks. I'll try and report my mileage experience when I return from this long road trip.

I get the same reception as the Pioneer radio in my '95 Maxima.

Haven't had that problem.

I think the display has a limited number of characters. I've been looking at getting the Delphi XM radio for my other Maxima and it does look like the display has more characters.

My screen shows that I get anywhere from 28 to 31 mpg (depending on temp, humidity, etc) when i set the cruise at about 65. This is w/o AC but still, is this unheard of?

I do a LOT of highway driving lately and I'm averaging 28MPG on my 05 Maxima.

Lately, since replacing my battery, I'm getting a clicking sound when I start up the car. I have no idea why it does it, but, thankfully, the car starts up. I want to get this taken care of before it gets worse, however, I do not know what is clicking. Any ideas??? PM me would be the easiest. Thanks!

This might seem like a dumb question, but have you reset your MPG? I get about 19 MPG in town and 27 mpg on the highway @80mph. If I slow down to 65mph, my mileage increases to over 30mpg.
