I first saw them forsale at http://www.courtesyparts.com/maxima/a34.html
Someone else here said that they are the same filter as another Nissan vehicle so they should be easy to order from anywhere that sells K&N.

For sure a modified intake will produce more power! Duh.
For $45 a K&N filter is a cheap way to get an air filter in there that you can rewash for the rest of the lifetime of the vehicle rather than buy paper ones once or twice a year.
I had a K&N style filter in my last vehicle. I'd say there was very little increase in power if any. And if there was any it was all at the top end, so it wasn't noticeable with my butt dyno. I suspect that the same is true with the 04 Max since the intake is relatively well designed in the first place.
The major benefit, apart from the rewashing of the filter, would perhaps be an increase in gas mileage. I got an extra mile per gallon out of the last filter I had. Fuel economy is a good thing.

It seems as quiet if not more so.
Now the power is noticable. I guess crisp is a good word. I think this will have more of an affect than people think do to the length wise slots vs the stock width wise.

The reason I changed mine was for the performance, and higher air flow rates.
OEM really needs to be changed twice a year. Once dirt gets on the paper, it "totallY" clogs that section.
With all the testing done on K & N, they would have to be fools to let more dirt in.

It could happen if you really went gonzo on the oil when you were cleaning it out. The instructions say to use very little. I would suspect (and I am guilty of it) that a lot of people use too much oil when re-oiling them after cleaning. I think a lot of that could be cured by waiting overnight for the oil to spread out to the entire filter surface after you spray it on. Its when you do it in a rush that you will end up putting on too much and getting some dropletts sucked into the intake and coating the MAF etc.
There was a kid here in town with a POS riced out Neon that had problems. He was cleaning his filter weekly because he was so "hardcore" that he figured more was better. All he ended up doing was putting a load of oil down his intake. I think that the frequency of cleaning has a lot to do with where you live and the type of driving you do too. For me once a year was plenty for 20-24k km's of driving 50/50 chity/hwy.
I don't think our intake is too hard to get the filter out of . You could throw in the old (clean) air filter while the K&N is pulled for cleaning. That way you won't be in a rush to do it. You can have the luxury of time to dry it out properly that day. Then re-oil and wait for it to completely travel to all the fibers in the filter overnight.

No, it was a straight drop in. The filter number is 33-2031.
It is woth it. I have put several K&N filters in my cars over the years. But, this has been the most noticable power increase (for a drop in).

Just a K&N probably won't register any changes on the butt-dyno. I did have a '98 Silverado Z71 a few years back and I swapped the stock air filter with a K&N. Couldn't tell any difference when I first did it, only way I could tell it made a difference was when I took it out and put the stock back in right before I sold it. Boy, talk about it being a dog afterwards. Made it really sluggish when I punched it and it lost alot of top end.
Best way to tell if it helps any, drive the p*ss outa it with the K&N for a week or two, then swap the orig. back in. See if it makes a difference then

i had the gaskets in there, but yesterday took them out it was actually a better fit. the filter is the same size as the OE so i didnt think they were necessary. i also talked to a tech from nissan who said its not necessary. however, if it is necessary, how do i go about getting them now, cause they were stick on and have no glue left on them?

Putting in the right year make and model shows that the K&N site lists two different part numbers:
33-2031-2 Cartridge
33-2259 Non-Cartridge
Anybody know what the difference is?

Enter 2003 Sentra instead of 2004 Maxima and the 33-2259 pops up on there too. Also check out 2004 Sentra.
