something new about the shimmy, i think

not sure if anyone noticed this yet, but i read most of the 1000 pages of the pages of the shimmy posts, and originally my car didnt do it.

i was trying to video tape it for you guys the otherday but you couldnt tell because i was shaking, as well as the wheel....

anyway.... what i noticed was how everyone was saying the wheels were out of balance, round, ect ect.

however....... while it was shaking steadily at 65mph with my foot off the gas, i put it in netural, and it stopped completely.....

this leads me to beleive that it is not the tires or anything of the sort because they were still going to the same speed...

i dont know what it could be, but i think it elimates that possibility of being out of round/unbalanced/ect ect

sorry if someone noticed/posted this already i cant keep up with the infinitely growing post

Good observation Fix, another thing that I was wondering was, if the shimmy had gone away for the guys that have replaced the factory wheels. If it's still there then it's not the wheels/tires. This then begs the question " what's causing this problem?" I hope that between all of us we'll eventualy figure this out. RC

That leads you to believe that it is a tranny issue, but since it happens with manuals, 5sp auto and 4sp auto, that can't be it. If it is the same problem, then it must be something else in the drive train

I tried this on my way home (I don't have the shimmy issue) and the only thing I felt was the disengagment of the tranny. The tranny holds it back at 65 and coasting, when you put it into Neutral it is free to coast.

Just tried slapping the Max in neutral while coasting at 65mph on a smooth surface and i noticed no change in the shimming in the wheel.

In addition to this trick I played with the air pressure 32psi up front and 38psi out back (max psi is 44). It's driving real smooth now just as it did 3,000 miles ago.

Hey it works for NASCAR's $120,000 rides why not a $26,000 Max.

I posted on this several months back. My car went back to the plant (I live close to Smyrna) and they adjusted the steering rack friction, made it tighter. It worked. The car has been smooth ever since. I cannot believe you all are still dealing with this. I thought it would have been a global fix by now. We bought one of the first ones to hit the streets and my car was something like a guinea pig back at the plant. But again, it was a steering rack friction adjustment. It's not your wheels, could be some due to the conti's if you have them, but I had switched over to Michellins and it didn't make any difference.

Shimmy Update

Yes, the rack for my 04 MAX SL came in this morning, cost the dealership $1,850. for parts and labor. They did not try to adjust the new rack, just installed it. Steering and alignment afterwards were about the same, I did get to see the old "Rack" so I believe the work was done. No Shimmy what so ever!! until I took it on the interstate, there it was the "famous Shimmy" when driving above 55 MPH. Well what should I have Nissan replace next at their expense, rotors, transaxle, bearings, wheels, tires, struts? One interesting fact I've found is that the dealership will replace anything ask without hesitation. Perhaps I should go twice a week and replace anything that moves in the front end of the car except the engine...continue doing this until the problem goes away, there is a recall or bulletin, or I just go crazy and drive the car under 50 MPH at all times...
