Gas Milage and Type

My car has got about 700 miles on it right now. My concern is the gas milage. I was under the impression that I would get atleast 400-500 miles per tank but I have got 600 miles to two tanks of gas. Do I just need to break it in a while or do I go to the dealership.
Another question I have is about the fuel type. Nissan recommends premium but is it really necessary? There is only a four dollar difference per tank but it can add up real quick?

I've used mostly 87 and lately a couple tanks of 94. There is a slight improvement in mileage with the 94. Maybe an extra 1mpg. But its hard to tell as there are a lot of variables in the equation.

I'd say the biggest difference is putting more mileage on the car. As the engine has broken in my car has gotten better fuel economy. I'd say after 6000 miles its going to be about as good as it gets.
