Paint Chip Problem

Does the 6th Gen Maxima have the same paint chip problem that the 5th Gen's do?

I have a 5th gen, and a guy at work just bought a 6th gen SL...

I was wondering if he needed to get that clear bra for his car.

thanks

Not yet. I've had the '04 since May. I had a 2k1 AE before so I know... Clear bra? Why not. I usually don't keep a car long enough to justify the price but if it's a keeper or you're just fussy about it, go for it.

Your AE had no chips? What color? When I traded my majestic blue AE after 23 months it looked like it had a rash on the hood.

My guess is that the guys without paint chip problems are staying within the government recommended speed limits. My 2003 SE has a TON of paint chips up front..but I do 100+ regularly.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll pass it on to the guy that just bought his 2004.

I would think the paint on the 6th gen would be good since they are built in the USA. Japan is the reason for the crappy paint. Mine shows the sandblasted look.

What do you base this on? ( Japan is the reason for the crappy paint).

So? How does that prove anything? If you know they used a process of painting in Japan that's different from what is used somewhere else, then that'd mean something. It's a logical fallacy. It's like saying, my little brother went to germany for 3 months when he was 14 and he grew 2 inches. He went to germany, and that's where he grew, so going to germany makes people grow 2 inches. It doesn't make any sense.

Fine you want to make a fuss about it it's all Nissan's fault. All I know is my car looks like $hit and I am going to get it repainted.

Since when is 'logical fallacy' a disqualification for posting on the org? By that measure 85% of what is posted...

I have an 03 SE and I know about any paint issues. I try to alleviate the issue by not drafting(tailgating) other vehicles on the highway. Also, don't think it is just Nissan. My freind has an 03 Lexus SC430 and the front of his car is chipped like it got pelted with sand/rocks. It looks bad.

My neighbor already has about 6 nicks on his new 04 Mustang. It does seem that it's not just a Nissan problem.

I'm with you, 1 year and 4 months no (visible anyway) paint chips on the front. I stay back from most cars and definately trucks. I am also the guy parked in the parking space that is as far away from the store as possible.

Paint formulations in the U.S. are dictated more by our exalted Environmental Protection Agency than by manufacturer's decisions. The EPA thinks carmakers are gonna cause global warming or something, and have mandated water-based paints instead of the old solvent-based laquers and enamels we used to love so much. Since cars painted in Japan aren't subject to the same restrictions we have, you'd tend to think those cars would have better paint than U.S.-made vehicles.

At some pont in the future, we'll see powdercoats and colors impregnated into the body materials, and our paint woes will be a thing of the past.

Mike
