Hi, I just bought my 04 maxima , and for some reason I have the naviigatioon controls but I didnt buy navigation. I cant believe the dealers didnt catch this mistake. Anyways, Im going to the delaer tomrorow, but is there anyway for me to see if I actually have the navigation, where is the gps receiver and where is the dvd player mounted? is it accessible? I cant change my time right now because the I have the wrong control and the standard display. Man this dealership rushed to much last night and didnt get things squared away, I also have scratches on the damn thing, Im not too happy so far.

WHAT?

So you have all the navigation buttons, but no NAV? Sounds like manufacturing screw up to me because none of this stuff is dealer installed.

In front of the shifting lever on the center console there is a mini door that you can push in and it'll open. Then, if you have the dvd player, there will be a piece of felt type cover there that you can take out, and the dvd player is hidden behind that. If you don't have the dvd player, I think it's just a storage compartment. If you do have it, it's a very small space inside with the dvd player hidden behind the false back.

I have a rather large comparment, I cant remove any felt. the nave controls just seem like a manufacturer screw up. Im asking for the nav to be installed or I want a new car because I dotn want them to be taking apart my console trying to fix that. SO far this experience sucks.

Sounds like you didn't take your time through the deal and let the dealer "boss" you around. What are the non Nav controls supposed to look like? As far as I remember, it was set up the same as the Nav, maybe the buttons were labeled different... it's been almost a year since I've been in a non nav max.

Are you sure it's the NAV control pod? Here's what the non-NAV center console looks like:

If yours looks different, you may have NAV and just don't know it! Doesn't the window sticker say?

I believe from his description that he just ended up with the wrong set of switches. I had mine all out of the car today, and that panel has nothing to do with actually "having" Nav or not. It's just a set of dumb switches mounted to the panel. The telltale would be the DVD drive behind the false door as described above and the actual NAV electronics which, as far as I could tell, are mounted above the CD/Tape unit. Switching the switch panel should be easy enough just as long as the non-nav electronics has the same connector to plug into the switch panel as the nav model.

Yes I do not have the above 6 switches (trip, fuel econ,h , m...), instead I have the nav controls. However all I have is a compartment with no dvd, I cannot find a hidden door.

DO you guys think im crazy for asking for a new car since this screwup and the scratches that are on the car?

Well, if you definitely didn't pay for NAV and NAV isn't built into your car, I agree I'd be weirded out by NAV controls that aren't hooked up to a NAV system (and which, I assume, therefore don't work). If that's the case, it looks like you got some kind of car from the Bizarro World that got a NAV head unit and never got the NAV guts.

In a way, you have a unique car, like a mis-struck nickel or something, but in the real world it isn't going to help the car's value nor your enjoyment of it. Having them change out the head unit controls may be fine, but to have to subject a brand new car to that is over the top.

I agree ... I think I'd tell them to roll out another car that wasn't put together by a committee.

Chris, I not only don't think that you are crazy for asking for a newcar but I think you WOULD be crazy not to. I don't about your state, but in Pennsylvania you have up to 72 hours to cancel a purchase. If you just picked up the car, you still have enought time to get out of it and demand either a new car or the return of your trade. Call your consumer protection agent for your municipality for guidance. Good luck. SemperFi

I would ask for a new car.

That seems very odd that it would be like that. Almost like the first one was damaged and then replaced with the wrong panel after it left the factory. I really doubt that the factory would make that mistake.

Plus if the scratches are very big, that would bug the **** out of me.

I went to the dealer first thing this morning, at first he thought I was being a little picky about the scrates and said he would fix em all, but I dont want them to repaint fenders... THen he said he would also replace the dash controls for me. Once I said I would like a new car he said pick one out. THere was only one other one on the lot that was equipped the same way. I checked it out looks perfect, the battery was dead so he had to get a jump to start it up, appears perfect, scares me that the battery is dead, but hes replacing it, he said somebody must of left a light on etc... who knows right? anyways, he said that they will detail it today, while I drive the other one to work, if the new car isnt perfect tongight then I cancel the sale or pick out yet another car. What do you guys think?
THe car looks good, cant tell till its detailed though, some rust on the rotors so you know its been sittin there, the battery was dead, thats another sign of idle time. It has 60 miles on it, so it wasnt driven much. What do you guys think? THis dealership is generally reputable thats the funny thing that I am having this weirdness.

My opinion is that you did the right thing. Check the second car out and if it's okay, go for it. Don't worry about the rust film on the rotors ... I've seen that on brand new cars coming off the transport trucks and it doesn't hurt a thing. You can look at the little sticker down by the driver's door sill and find out when the car was built if that is an issue. But if the dealer is putting in a new battery, you should be as good as gold.

Hell I get rust on the rotors after I wash the car and it sits in the driveway for the night.

Also the battery being dead isn't a big deal. There is a lot of draw from the computer and whatnot in the vehicles these days. If its not run for a month or so it could be drained to the point it's dead.

I also would go for the other new car.... However, if you are looking to add the Sat radio option, I would check the driver's door jam for the Satellite radio equipped sticker... If the car's been sitting, it may be an early production Max that is not equipped with the Sat wiring.

Good Luck!
