I had mine fixed at the dealer but when it's really cold out I can hear a little noise like styrofoam against glass or steel.

There is a TSB for this problem, maybe the instructions are shown in it. See: http://www.nissanhelp.com/Bulletins/Maxima/2004/1.htm.

Service Bulletin Num : 03066
Date of Bulletin: JUN 27, 2003 View Document

Component: BODY
Summary: RATTLE OR BUZZ FROM REAR PARCEL SHELF

Also you can view all the service manuals for $19.99US at http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/default1.asp. All you have to do is get a one day subscription so you could browse the publications in pdf format during that time. Here's a more direct link: http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissa...d=&dept_id=18#

This page is pretty cool too: http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi...a/Diagnose.htm

My brand new Maxima has the deck rattle too. If Nissan isssued the TSB in June 2003, why are they still shipping cars without the fix having been made at the factory?

What was the build date or VIN # (last six digits) of that car?

I had the exact problem when I bought my Max in February. I took it right back to do the dealership with a print out of the TSB. They were able to fix it the first try. There is absolutely NO reason at all why your dealership should not be able to fix that problem. I would strongly suggest taking it back with the TSB & tell them to fix it. You shouldn't have to spend money out of your own pocket to fix a manufacturer defect when your car is still practically new....

Last six VIN digits are 853441. How does that translate to manufacturing date?

I had the same problem with the rear parcel shelf rattle. I fixed the problem by putting some heavy duty felt pads from Home Depot (the kind that goes on the bottom of furniture legs) between the brake light housing and the rear glass. This damps the movement enough that I don't hear the rattle anymore. The pads are only 1/2 in diameter, so they are barely noticeable from the outside unless you're looking real closely. I may have the dealer do the TSB one of these days, but I hate the inconvenience of not having a car while they do the repair. Once the rattle was fixed, my desire to be inconvenienced went way down.

Wow I like the idea. I had my dealer do the TSB, and I watched him do it. He did it far better than the TSB says to do it and it still rattles. It stopped only for a couple of days. I was going to spend some money and get it fixed with DynaMat on the shelf under the plastic cover. But if this works I can save lots of money. Plus I am waiting for my Dealer to finish fixing other problems before I do any mods to the car. I bought it on Jan 02 04, and now have 7500 miles on it with 3 major problems. maybe I can get them to give me a trade for a new one since it has been to the dealer 4 times to fix problems. wishful thinking I think. ;-)

I had the same problem with my SEelite - had the dealer do the fix (TSB) and it still rattles - especially in the cold. Before the dealer did the fix I stopped the rattle with clear rubber cabinet bumpers (3/8" diameter and 1/4" thick with adhesive on one side) slid between the glass and the high mount stop light - problem was fixed. After the dealer did the repair he removed the bumpers and guess what - the rattle is back. Looks like I'll be making another trip to Lowe's in the hardware section to reapply the bumpers...

So if I ordered a car, that should arrive about 60 days after h*ll freezes over, are the TSB's already fixed?

This is without a doubt, the most annoying part of the car. I had mine 'fixed' at the dealer and still hear the rattle. I also tried the felt pads but that didn't do it either. There's something more pervasive about this rattle and I just can't figure out what it is or precisely what causes it. It almost changes your whole perception of the car.

HEY I forgot to mention this... I did mention I watched them do it. I think there are two hooks you need to pull below the back seat. It will allow removal of the bottom of the back seat. Then you have to remove the rear of the back seat and the C-Pillar covers. Lots of bolts, removal of the seatbelts etc. IDK how they removed the C-Pillar covers though. Hope this helps
