How to remove display screen?

Anyone have any experience removing the display screen on the center stack? Mine hasn't had the dust problem I've seen mentioned before, but lately there has been a strange growth toward the bottom inside edge. It's almost translucent, and it has a straight edge on the bottom, but on the top it's like growing little tentacles. Looks almost like crystals growing on the inside surface of the screen.

You have to look at it in bright light or it doesn't show up, so it's not anything urgent, but I'd like to take the screen off and clean it. I don't want to break anything, though, so if someone knows how that sucker is attached, please let me know.

Thanks!

Mike

Call your service department and set up an appointment... There is a service bulletin describing the moisture you are experiencing... DO NOT ATTEMPT to remove this unit on your own... Your car is still under warranty... Let Nissan fix it for you….

I've had the same problem too!! I took my car to the dealer and they not only cleaned and dusted the inside, they also replaced the plastic screen for me. Of course, no charge.

Thanks, guys. I'm aware there's a TSB on this, but I'd rather do it myself than spend half a day at my Nissan dealer letting them do it. I dunno, maybe I'll relent and take it in ...

Mike, you start by removing the shift ****. Once thats off remove the shifter bezel. The easiest way to do this is to open the cupholder, shimmy something under the edge, dont pry too hard, its only clipped in. Once you have that out theres two screws holding the front plate on. Remove those and the CD/Tape plate, and then theres two screws on the bottom edge of the info screen piece. Make sure you take into consideration that the clear screen, the frame around it and both the center vents are 1 piece. Its really not hard... lemme know if I can be of anymore help

Pry where? Just under the edge on the footwell side of that square piece around the shifter?

Oh never mind. I got it out. I opened the cup holder area and got a butter knife under the back edge. It was just a matter of gently prying around the edges to get it up. One of the small metal clips was also bent on mine, holding it in too tight. I fixed it with a pair of pliers.

Don't forget to disconnect the harness to the emergency lights button when you're taking off the panel.

Hold the leather part and gently twist the lower plastic half. It will click then drop. once thats done the rest is cake. Like Canadain said disconnect the two plugs from the underside of the bezel. The smaller one is kinda tricky it likes to slide.

Damn, even using microfiber cloth (freshly cleaned) and eye glass cleaner there are tiny tiny tiny scratches on that plexiglass. I swear the damn stuff scratches just looking at it!

I'll whine to the dealership about it and get a new one I guess. Or....hmmm I should get it replaced with glass. Hey now thats an idea!!! I'll take the piece to a glass shop and get glass cut to match. Acutally now that I think of it, a picture framing place will have thin anti-glare glass they can cut to size! This is going to be sweet.

I'll let everyone know how the retrofit goes if it goes as planned. The only thing I see being a problem is the little clips that hold the screen onto the four pins at the back. No idea how they come off. They seem to be a one way only type of fastener.

Scrach resistant polycarbonate would be a better choice than glass. You could get it in the same thickness any sign shop would most likely have some pieces they could sell you.

Hmm I guess so. I don't think I've seen the poly scratch resistant material. Just as long as its nice and clear I'd use it. It would be a safer material to have in the car in case of a bad crash of course.

the problem with glass would be that it would have to be much thicker to be able to with stand everyday use. you would have to mod the console to get it to fit.

"Thicker to be able to stand everyday use"?? Dude what do you do to that poor screen? Throw stuff at it? Rest dumbells up there?

There's virtually no force being directed through that screen (other than gravity and other accellerations). It's just sitting there in the frame.

My car has 2200 miles and the damn screen is scratched from using microfiber towels (cleaned ones) tiny scratches visible only in the heavy sunlight. It drives me crazy becasue I want my car immaculate especially this screen, if anybody replaces with soem heavy duty plastic please post cost and store where I can have made. This would be killer.
THanks

Wipe some oil on it with a soft, old t-shirt so as not to spread lint.
I have used lemon oil, and also petroleum jelly. If you keep some grease on it, those scratchs don't show up. Otherwise, that plastic screen is
a total POS.

Well I just pulled the screen. The little fasteners are a biatch to take off.

Tomorrow I'll get some glass or plexi cut and source out vinyl to mask the viewing area off.

Once I've got it all worked out I'll offer replacement screens to those interested. Does anyone have a preference towards either glass or plexi? I'm going with anti-reflective glass for mine. Also the vinyl mask around the edge could be a custom colour (basically red, black, yellow, silver, blue, etc....).

I'll go the glass route. This plastic is BS. Cheap, scratchy junk.
I still can't figure out how you guys got the thing off. Maybe some
pictures with an explanation?

I'd go for one, non-reflective glass. Is the vinyl mask a border around the outside edge? Paint?

Would you mind taking some pictures of the installation process and finished/installed?
