in cabin micro filter

Does anyone know of a cheap replacement for the in cabin Micro Filter on the 2004 Max? The dealer wants $80 to replace it. I pulled mine out and cleaned it. It does not have plastic around it like the replacements.

This may not be the place, but does anyone think that filter actually does any good? For example, when you drive behind a diesel truck or pass by a cattle feedlot or pass through a little smoke, the Maxima seems to let all of it into the cabin. By contrast, in my BMW you never know you even encountered anything.

Considering that, I don't think I'll bother to change this (IMO useless) filter.

But if you never change it , the air flow will be restricted.

How often should one change this filter anyway? I've just had the car serviced for oil change and rotation and they did bring in the air filter to show me that it needed replacement (car is 11 months old) no mention was made of the in-cabin filter. I'm assuming all 2004 Maximas have an in-cabin filter. I have not noticed any improvement with the in-cabin filter over my '91 or '00 Maximas.

Its going to depend on where you live, how much driving you do, road conditions etc.

On my last car I replaced it about once a year and it was pretty filthy. I hardly ever go down a dirt road, and I'd say I do about 70/30 city/highway driving. I think once per year would be about right, maybe a bit longer, 14 months max.

Buy the Wix from O'Reilly for under $15 and it is great.

Also, this should be changed every 6 months for someone who likes their car or 1 year for someone who cares less.

For a maintenance of $15 a year? If someoen does not do it atleast a year, I really don't know what kind of maintenance you do on your car. $15 in a year?

Well, if you are of the opinion that it is useless, then you should just take it out altogether.

Filters are only good at removing particles from the air with respect to the particle size they are designed for. In order to remove smells from a gas you are going to have to have extremely minute pores in the filter media as well as a carbon filter to capture any vapors. The filter in the dash is very good at what it is designed for. I have even found small leaves in mine and tons of black dirt. Previous cars I've owned that did not have filters, put all that junk into the cabin air. Not a good thing. It's a $30 part that you change every 2 years or so, pennies really. A filter that would remove smells from the air would not allow for an air flow rate that would be capable of cooling down or heating up the cabin. It's a trade off between filtration and volumetric flow rate.

I've had the fram fresh breeze in mind for a while now (actually I'm due for a change). I'm not sure I ever noticed a difference from the regular in-cabin filters vs the fram in terms of keeping the cabin air / smell fresher.

purolator breatheEASY at amazon is $6 after rebate. if you have prime, it's free shipping. otherwise, add items to get over $25 for FS (like the pureone air filter which also has a rebate and is $11 after rebate).

out of curiosity what if we were to spray like fabreeze on the filter, let it dry naturally then put it back in, am just using fabreeze as a example, wouldnt that send a scented smell through the vents?

Sure, but your filter still wouldn't serve the purpose that it was intended to do.

I changed mine twice in 130,000miles on an '04...you think it would be noticeably fresher inside, it wasnt. But I felt good I went though the hassle of changing it, which is a ***** to get to BTW..do it every year or so, heck why not?
