Key question?

When I purchased my (used) 04 Max, it only had one key. The dealership got me another key and I was wondering if I could take it to Lowes or someplace like that and get it cut and then program it myself. Is that possible? And if so...how do I go about programming it? Or, should I make an appointment and let the local Nissan dealership do it for me?

Thank you all for all the help you provide with this forum. There is always interesting and useful info here.

Take care,

Dwayne

I believe you need at least two keys programmed to the system to make a 3rd. Though I could be wrong I'm no expert in this area.

The stealership will charge you quite a bit for this service I understand.

my stealership warned me not to lose cuz they're about $200. You can get extra remotes cheap on eBay.

A key number plate is supplied with your keys. If you lose your keys, see a NISSAN dealer for duplicates by using the key number. NISSAN does not record key numbers so it is very important to keep track of your key number plate.

A key number is only necessary when you have lost all keys and do not have one to duplicate from. If you still have a key, your NISSAN dealer can duplicate it.

The car comes with 2 master keys with remotes and one valet key. I would press the issue to get the valet key as part of the purchase. That only seems fair to me and if they did not collect that many keys on the trade in, they should have.

If you look closely at your key youll see a small square shape. Thats the chip inside it, thats why they cost so much and thats what prevents us from being able to have keys cut.

KCmaxx and originalstarlit are correct. You should have received 2 matching master keys w/ a burgundy/maroon valet key w/ your car purchase. Otherwise, as the owner's manual explains, you MUST go to NISSAN to get a new key programmed because those keys are programmed (w/ a chip inside) to work w/ your specific car. It's part of the Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer Syster (NVIS) which will not allow the engine to start without the use of the registered NVIS key. Click on the below link for more info on the system and how much purchasing a new key would be:
