touch-up paint

We went to Nissan to get black touch up paint to fix a couple of scratched on our '04. The guy at the detailing shop told us that we needed a clear-coat paint as well as the black we got from the dealer. So...we contact the dealer again and are told that the black we were sold will dry to the high gloss clear-coat, and that we don't need a second paint and, in fact, that Nissan does not sell a "second" clear-coat to put over the color.

Well, I'm confused. Who's right here? And has anybody else had experience using the Nissan touch up paints?

From my experiences touch up paint makes the blemish look worse.

nissan sells touch up paint with 2 ends. one side paint and the other side clear coat.

Well, I was in the exact same situation (in fact, I'm still there since I haven't had the time to apply the touch up paint yet... )

Anyway, I bought both the bottled and "pen" type paint. The bottled paint seems to contain the clear coat mixed within it, while the pigment end of the pen has no clear coat.

To test this out, I applied a patch of all types of paint to the inside of the truck area. The bottled paint was much shinier, and matched the exterior of the car very well. The pen's pigmented end seems to match the non-exposed areas of the exterior (such as the inside of the trunk). I applied the clear coat but I don't think I'm going to even mess with it; the bottled paint looks about perfect (plus I forgot what the clear coat looks like ). I'll try to take a picture of the test area on my car tonight or tomorrow - but from my experiences, I'd just go with the bottled paint (I wish I would have known that before I bought mine, as the pen was like $12 and the bottle like $5). BTW, I have a 2004 Red Opulence.

From: a meadow south of Atlanta
I have somehow managed to keep my Maximas ding free (I will never park where I feel another vehicle could reach my Maxima with its door), but my wife is always getting dings on her trucks. While we were stringing barbed wire in our west meadow a year or so ago, one of the horses actually tried to take a bite out of the truck hood.

Sure, the truck was a beautiful green, but come on! I was so mad I chased that horse until I dropped.

Anyway, even after years of trying, and considering myself to be fairly good with paints, I have yet to be satisfied with any touch-up paint job I have ever tried on any vehicle.

Don't get your hopes too high when using touch-up paint.

But then maybe I am just a klutz.

LOL LOL LOL LOL! I can't stop laughing just to funny...this reminds me of a story...Back in Turkey they used to make a Turkish car using fiberglass....One day a vet was at farm looking after some horses...by the time he came out a few hours later there were two or three goats munching on his car....he was mad as hell and his car was minus a few fenders! LOL!
