replacing interior trim

Does anyone know a good site to find oem matching color interior door/stereo trim replacements (was moving some stuff and they got scratched). also, if anyone has done it, is it easy to do yourself?

Thanks

This might help you if you don't find replacments:

There are a lot of sites for overlays, but i havn't found any for replacements other than the oem ones.

There are auctions on ebay selling the trim, but as far as finding a kit that matches the SE trim i haven't been able to find one.

SilverBelle, for some reason I can't see the pics you originally posted. What did you use to paint the trim with? Thanks!

I may try this paint on all the trim, since it scratches so easy, does it look stock?

I called dash comapnies and they all saud the max can only have overlays, not molded trim because of the crappy design of the interior. :-(

Since the car HAS molded trim, I don't understand why there can't be aftermarket molded trim???

If you do it right..it looks totally stock. That's why i posted a pic that included the door handle and the trim. The door handle is the stock paint. I re-did all of my door trim pieces and then coated them with a few coats of clearcoat. They look great and are very durable.

what was your process of doing this? If its really durable with the clear coat, we should paint the shifter plate area. How did you find out about this paint, and the same color etc.. Also, I wonder if its more durable than stock, like will bug spray remove the paint again?

All i did was bring a trim piece into the autoparts store and I matched the paint by eye. I had my wife, the colour expert, check it when i came home. I wet sanded using 800 grit until very smooth. I sprayed a couple of coats of colour and then a few coats of clear. I only did it to one trim piece and let it dry to see if it really matched the colour. I had my wife check the result too. She gave me the thumbs up and i finished the other 3 pieces. This was a couple of months ago. Not a scratch on any of them.

I was thinking a nice bright neon orange spray paint for the lower grill.

Bob,

Thanks for posting the photos! Let me run this by you. I would like to paint the door handle cups, trim around the window switches, etc. Do you think it will look okay and be durable?

I have frost interior and those trim pieces really look cheap. I was thinking about doing the vent trim as well.

All opinions welcome.

I think that it would be okay as long as you take your time. Make sure that the pieces are well sanded and mooth as a baby's butt.

Spray in very light coats. Many light coats are better then a couple of thick coats.

Hey Bob,

What auto parts chain did you find this stuff at? I can't find it at AutoZone or O'Reily here locally.

TIA!

Hey Max Cat,

I bought mine at Canadian Tire way up here in Ottawa, Ontario.
The Duplicolor site says you can buy it in these stores:

http://www.duplicolor.com/solutions/wheretobuy.html

If you can't find it locally, PM me and i'll see what i can do to help you out.

Thanks! I have 2 more locals to try tomorrow, but if I have no luck I'll give you a shout. I did buy a can of "millenium Silver" from WalMart and it is verrrrry close, but a shade brighter and with some light shiney speckles in it. I could get away with it, but I'd always know and it would drive me nuts

Thanks! They do seem to play well together. It's so cool to have 2 vehicles that have the same controls in the same places, nav that works the same in both, and share similar DNA styling-wise. The "cutout" part of the Armada grille ALMOST makes the Max's bucktooth look right when they're sitting next to each other.

Hey, maybe I'm on to something here. Somebody at the Armada factory said "hey, what do we do with all these dumb bucktooth looking cutouts from the Armada grille?"

Bob,
I got my car back from the dealership and noticed a huge scratch on the passenger side. I want to do what you did to your trim, I see you hand sanded the molding with 800 grit paper, did you do the entire trim peice or just where it needed to be painted?

I was wondering if you could maybe post a pic taken during the day with no flash to avoid the flash reflection? I need to paint the trim. I am so mad at the dealership for scuffing my car up. The interior is so f#@%ing cheap. I know, common problem to all

Thanks bob

Actually i did all 4 door pieces whether they needed it of not. But the front driver's side was very bad. I sanded the complete pieces and painted the whole thing. Then i did a couple of clarcoats over it. Havn't had a single scratch since.

I'll take a pic tomorrow in good light and post it.

Here are pics from today. No flash, just regular daylight:

Trim and including the door handle for comparison:

Hope this helps.

I'm bumping this back up because I want to ask SilverBelle04 if the paint on his trim is still holding up? I have some scratched areas on my passenger door trim and I am considering doing this if it works and holds up.

So, SilverBelle04 does it still look good?

Great. Sad that we have to resort to this but if it works I'll try it!

Thanks!

Well, there are other options such as a custom dash. Depends on how deep you want to dig in your pockets. This company is not too cheap, but they can make some nice real custom carbon fiber kits or other to go over what you have and no worry about paint or scratches. It is a pretty extensive kit, but the real stuff will cost you a bit. On my BMW I had a nice real silver carbon fiber interior....loved the hell out of it. When I have money to blow, going with a silver carbon fiber kit to go over what I have. This is just to give you an idea that there are other options out there.
