Little brother getting 17 horses ...
Infiniti announced about 2 weeks ago that the G35 sedans will go to 277hp for 2005 and get several other refinements, but I haven't seen anything at all about the 2005 Maxima.
I don't care about the rumors ... has anything "official" been released by Nissan on the Max yet?

Haven't seen anything official yet, Mike_TX. But as you probably remember, I have been guessing for six months the Max goes to somewhere around 275 to 280 HP in '05.
I feel Nissan wants to keep abreast of the competition; especially the TL. Nissan may not consider Infinity (the G35) as true 'competition', as it is also a Nissan family company.
In other words, Nissan is not concerned with whether the G35 has more or less HP than the Maxima, as the G35 and I35 now reside at the bottom of the Infinity sedan totem pole, with the Q45 as the flagship and the M45 as the performance leader.
The Maxima, however, is the flagship sedan of Nissan, and its image requires that it be very competetive with the competition, especially in HP.
But you asked for facts, and I have none.

"Little Brother"???
Hate to break it too you, but the G35 is NOT the little brother of the 6th gen Max. It's the better looking, faster, more athletic, more desired, smarter, older brother!
It's DOUBTFUL the 2005 will get a power boost. That will most likely come in 2006 with a mild design refreshening. And it's power boost will most likely be 5 hp and 5 lbs-ft of torque. About the maximum you'd ever want to go on that FWD (or most for that matter) platform.

If i was a nissan engineer, i wouldn't waste time and money just to have 5 more horsepower than TL...
having 5 more horsepower than competition doesn't mean anything...
it's gotta be at least 15-20 hp to have effect on sales.
so the point is...i wouldn't expect power boost on 2005 max...
maybe some for 2006 or 2007 max...

I figured "little brother" would raise some hackles.
But if you consider that the Maxima has been around longer, it has had more horsepower than the G35 (sedan), and is physically larger than the G, "little brother" seems to fit.
Sometimes your little brother doesn't look exactly like you (is it true Mama messed around with that Skyline guy?), and sometimes he thinks he's big enough to whip your a$$, but he's still your little brother.

Car manufacturers have long held back improvements -especially in performance for the sake of tooting their horns and one-upping the competition in comnig model years. Why do you think there is always a game leap-frog among market seqment competitors, yesterday and today?
Max vs TL
Viper vs Vette
Z3 / Z4 vs S2000 vs TT vs Boxter
Camry vs Accord / Civic vs Corolla vs Sentra (OK, why bother)
Z vs Supra
Mustang vs Camaro / Firebird (RIP)
Also, with the broad use of the VQ engine (from the Quest, Murano / Fx, Max / G35S, to the Z/G35C), the way this is done is to optimize the engine (i.e. Z/G35 coupe) - although NOT to the fullest (see above) and then de-tune for the other applications by swapping in varying lower performance computer controls, cams, heads, intake, exhaust, valves etc.
It's all a game...
