Decoding VIN#

Does anyone know whether or not you can determine, from the VIN#, if the car should have HID headlights?

Thanks.

The original release documentation for the 6th gen said the HIDs would be on all SLs and as part of the driver preferred package on the SEs.

Even that delineation is not 'the last word', as a few thousand '04 SLs and SEs with DP pkg were built with the 'HID Delete' option (listed on the window sticker), in which regular headlights were used, with a paltry hundred or two trimmed off the MSRP.

I'm not sure of a 'failproof' way to know which type headlight is on a particular car without driving it at night. Someone here will probably know a way.

Thanks gentlemen for the responses.

This is a case of typing before thinking. I know that there's no way of telling from the VIN whether or not the vehicle should have had HIDs.

Anywho, thanks again gents
