Custom Cat-Back Exhaust System

Check out the exhaust system I had made for my 04 Max. I got tired of waiting for Stillen to come out with their cat-back, so I had the muffler guy down the road bend me up a custom system using a 2 1/2" stainless tube branching out into two 2 1/4" sections of tubing with 2 twin-tip MagnaFlow mufflers. I think it looks better than any aftermarket system I have seen, because it looks close to stock with the twin tips. See the pix at:

While you are there, check out my other mods. I've done all the work myself (except for the exhaust system & tint). I have also modified the front struts and the rear suspension to lower the car another inch (pix to come!).

Feel free to sign the guestbook.

Nice ride man. I'm also looking into custom exhaust once I find out what the deal is with my car.
But my main concern is sound. How is the sound. At low rpms, at high? Do you have a resonator, new cat? Feel any gains.

Nice ride! I think that the exhaust looks great, but the tips appear to extend too far out from under the bumper cover (just my opinion).

However, I am interested in the sound as well.

Agreed, I was going to post something about that last night but it wouldn't let me for some reason.

04RedOpMax, very nice.

BTW
For those who wondered if just removing the Resonator (triangle canister) would change the exhaust tone or improve performance.

I had the resonator cut out and a straight pipe put in for $50.00. I did not have the flattened section replaced because although it appears restrictive, it is not. The only change as far as sound is, you hear a muted rumble of exhaust in the cabin now. The behind the car sound is also very muted. To compare, if you have aftermarket intake, the intake sound is always louder then the exhaust. I can't tell that the car performance any better, but the gas mileage is up from 19 mpg to 21 mpg.

The MagnaFlow mufflers are basically straight through and with the stock resonator completely eliminated, it was way to LOUD! I had the muffler dude put a small stainless MagnaFlow muffler where the resonator was before, right behind the cat, and the db's were cut in half. It still makes an annoying
"drone" at cruising speed (2000 to 3000 revs)but sounds pretty awesome when you stomp on the pedal. My 19 year old son loves it, but to Dad, it's still a little too loud. It has a nice low rumble at idle and really starts singing at around 4500 revs, when the CAI joins in.

I'm going to replace the small "resonator" muffler with a bigger one with a few more baffles in it and maybe cut down on the noise at cruising speeds. Other than that, I'm happy with the way the system turned out. It's hard to tell if I gained any ponies, only the dyno will tell.

Any idea what the parts number to your Magnaflow. The number that almost matches your muffler is 14861 and the other is 14830. The cheapest one I got from the Internet is $122.00 each so it is $244.00 for both. Thanks in advance.

The number is 14830. I actualy wanted the one with square tips, but they were out of stock every place I looked. I paid about $155.00 a piece, so if you can get them for $122.00, go for it! All total, I have about $1100.00 into the system.

last week I had the resonator removed and had a straight pipe put in its place. Ya it has a little drone, but thats what I was looking for. It's cool, cause the drone goes to about 3000rpms and then the intake pickes up the rest. I was just experimenting with the resonator for sh*ts and giggles, but still gonna get custom exhaust.

When I was there I asked them to do a straight back dual exhaust from the exhaust manifold and they told me that its a 10 grand fine for no cat.
What a bunch of pussies. More to come
