Help! Trying to find a better insurance company.

All (sorry if this has been posted before),

Anyone who has an 04' Max knows that the monthly payment for insurance is a car payment in itself. I am single, rent and have a good driving record. I live in Michigan and I need full coverage obviously.

Now, I know that there are a LOT of variables that go into the cost, but has anyone found one company to be cheaper than others?

I am currently with Farmer's and it's a whole lotta money. I've tried Geico, Progressive, etc. and they want to bend me over to the tune of around $1,900 a year.

Yahoo has an insurance quote page and of course some companies I've never heard of (Unitrin, eSurance) want to charge around 1,000 a year (which is more my style!).

Has anybody found one company to be cheaper than the others? I guess if you have one of these "cheaper" companies I'd love to hear how they are.

I'd kill for $1900 a year...

Seriously though... it depends on the going rates for your location and the criteria that the companies have. I know 2 people that work in insurance (one for Geico and the other for Liberty Mutual), and you'd be surprised at the kind of stuff the insurance people use to bundle you with other drivers.

Obviously where you drive is relevant, but things such as your credit, other drivers in the household and (obviously) moving violations, age and marital status will play a HUGE role in determining what tier you end up on. What I'm trying to say is that any one company might not be cheaper for you than others, unless you're "less than honest" about your situation.

If you're under 25 and single, that's 2 strikes against you right there -- regardless of how good your driving record is. If you have moving violations (speeding, cell phone, seatbelt, etc), that's more stuff that they use.

The type of car obviously matters... my 25 year old friend (male) is married, but he wanted to insure a Lexus GS430 in Brooklyn. They asked him for $12k a year because he has a bunch of violations on his record.

My 29 year old friend (female) in CT is married, and she wanted to insure a 1989 Honda Accord sedan and they asked her for $600 a year.

But I also know a 50-year old father of 5 that lives in Brooklyn... he just insured his '04 Maxima for $1200 a year.

This is all for 100/300 coverage too, since they're all homeowners.

It sucks, but sometimes that's the way the cookie crumbles...

I live in NY, and the car is under ALLSTATE insurance, and its under my dad's name....b/c he's the one with the great driving record. Its costing me around $1850/year. Supposedly thats a real good deal already...but who knows...I'm curious about how much others pay too...

I want be complaining anymore when I write that insurance check anymore. I pay $650 a year for 100/300 with a $200 detuctible. Of course I'm over 25, married, and no points. These are the 3 keys to getting the low rates.

I dropped my insurance by about $700 a year by moving about 4 miles. Before I was in a busy Boston suburb (Somerville), now I'm in a quiet little town (Belmont). I'm 27, single, not so great driving record (got screwed by a cop when I forgot to re-register my last max for 2 weeks after the month it was due), and I pay about $1900.

I honestly think that all insurance companies are going to be about the same. Maybe +- 5%, but I doubt it'll change much more than that... all those commercials that say "I saved hundreds of dollars on my car insurance" are totally bogus. They probably could have done the same thing by just talking to their old insurance company and making sure they're getting all the right deductions.

$1900 really isn't terrible for a male in the city.. and I'd definitely beware of noname internet insurance companies... you're definitely not going to want to deal with them if you're ever in an accident.

Actually, according to a study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, using 2001 data, New Jersey is #1, New York #2, DC #3, Rhode island #4, and Massachusetts #5.

(edit - just so there's no confusion.. that's #1 worst, etc)

Yay internet. And yay Massachusetts :P

I stand corrected. Texas does have the highest homeowners insurance in the country if I'm not mistaken. Texas is #1 in something. LOL.

Oh hell yeah... New Jersey. Not only do you have to pay a ton, you have to FIGHT for somebody to carry you...

And God forbid you get into an accident... a friend of mine has a clean driving record, married, customer for AGES. She gets into a fender-bender... BAM! Rates go up from $1200 to over $4k.

Thanks everyone

Thank you all for the replies. I have the "strikes" against me; i.e. single, non-home owner, etc.

I haven't talked to my adjustor since I moved one mile from work (better zip code too). Even if it's $20 a month cheaper I'd be happy.

Single, non-home owner, 24... and I pay $995/yr for my insurance. highest coverages, full GAP, 1000/500 deducts. I searched all over, had Progressive, and all wanted me to be 25 for cheaper rates. ERIE wouldn't even insure me since the Max is a "high performance" vehicle.

Try to get Cincinati. Next year I'll be 25 and it will go to 600/yr. Or find an agent with a lot of companies so they can compare for you. Mine had 20 auto insurances.

I was with 21st Century paying $1600/yr. I switched to American Express (that's right AMEX) Insurance and saved $800/yr.
Living in southern California/Married/over 25/clean record.

USAA is awesome as far as insurance companies go. My wife drives a 350z, I have the '04 Max, and we pay a total of around $2,200. Plus we get a rebate each year based on the company's performance. But as posted earlier, you have to have been (or child of ) a member of the armed services. If you qualify, it's great.

jc53, I love that rebate, that's a classy thing. I do all my banking and investment through them as well. I had 21st century before as well, but switched over. Can't complain!

Yep, I got into a fender bender before I purchased the maxima, and my insurance went up to 5,400 a year!
