The reviews of the 2004 Maxima mention much torque steer. Has anyone tried out the 2004 andd 2005 and has Nissan done anything about this? Or is it just picky reviewers and this isn't really a problem?

 

It Has the most torque steer of any fwd car I have ever driven.

 

Agreed 100%. When you put your foot down from a stop, you better have a good grip on that wheel...

 

I have a VDC and traction control and i dont notice torque steer at all... May be i have to push harder

 

only fix is less power or RWD. there's no fix, except some that claim their VDC helps. It's just a given with this car. I expect it and hold on. shows me the true power and helps me respect it.

 

I have a 6 speed and no LSD and it's a torque steering ho.

You need to hold on tight for the first couple of weeks. It is very predictable though and you learn to compensate for it instinctively. It can be a hellofalot of fun too!

 

Yeah. I don't really notice it anymore either.

A cure would be to go buy a Honduh with a torqueless wonder engine.

Ive got VDC on my 04 max and i got serious torque steer when i get on it. You know what though? ... i sorta like it... feels like im holdin on to a rocket )p

i don't mean to HIGH JACK i got 2k2 and it had lots of torque steer. since I've been upgrading my suspension and started with a drop and stiffer struts, since then the torque steer is gone. would I recommend doing the suspension sure. do you wanna do it to your 6th gen I don't know but look into it.

 

I too have gotten used to the torque steer. I remember at first that it was almost dangerous (coming from a 94 Plymouth Sundance), but now I never notice it (although I don't usually have jack rabbit starts).

 

I have to agree with Monotaur. I came from an 02 Olds Alero and when I first got my max it was nuts. I actually rented one before buying and almost lost control of it. Now though after 4mths of owning one, I don't notice it.

 

Has been a major issue with the Max since 2002, anyone not use to driving an 02-05 Maxima hard form a stop/low speed will complain.

 

92 Max - You asked about VDC. VDC is the acronym for Vehicle Dynamic Control, which is Nissan's name for their stability control system.

Unfortunately, Nissan put VDC on only about five to ten percent of '04 Maximas. But I am seeing it on between ten and fifteen percent of '05 Maximas.

VDC checks the position/direction/movement of the vehicle, and takes action to avoid an out-of-control situation. It has the ability to do such things as apply the brakes on one individual wheel in one thousandth of a second, if that is what is needed to correct the car's movement. It is almost impossible for a driver to even intentionally spin a car equipped with VDC on a dry road.

VDC comes as part of a package which includes VDC, TCS (Traction Control System), and a full size spare on an alloy wheel matching the OEM wheels. The MSRP of this package is $900. IIRC, the invoice was around $720 or so. TCS can also be had as a separate option at $300. I never considered buying my Maxima without the VDC package. I wanted it very much.

I don't know if the VDC, or my twenty years of driving FWD Maximas (familiarity), or my relaxed driving habits are the reason, but I have not noticed the first hint of torque steer on my five speed '04 SL.

 

With the kind of power the max has torque steer is inevitable.

Just have to learn to master it!!!

 

I've been trying to find someplace to rent a new Maxima for some time now without sucess. Who rents Maximas?

 

Hertz, and Enterprise has a few of them but they are hard to get always have been!
