No plates in the front?

Sorry if this was asked in the past, but I'm a brand new member to maxima.org so I haven't gone through all the previous posts with great detail yet........

This just caught my attention as I was happily viewing pics of the 6th gen maximas people have been posting and I noticed that several of you guys took off your front license plates? I'm just curious if it's allowed in NY to have a front license plate missing and if it is how one would go about removing it. Would it leave any holes in the front bumper? It just looks so much better with the front entirely clean of any obstructions and I was wondering if I could legally do that in NY.

MaximusX - If your state issues you two tags for your vehicle, then that state requires tags on both front and back. In such states, it is VERY illegal to drive without the front tag. You won't be imprisoned, but you will be fined.

Most states now require only rear tags. Folks in those states sometimes remove the front licemse bracket, fill the holes, and paint over the filler. I will let them tell you exactly how they do it.

Living in a one tag state, all I do is remove the bracket, paint the screwheads to match the bumper, then put them back in the holes without the bracket. Very primitive, and totally unacceptable with those who demand perfection.

Arizona is a one tage state. Fortunately most of the dealers here do not put a license frame on the front bumper, so no filling in holes for me!

CT used to be a one-tag state. They moved to 2 tags a few years back.

California is a one tag state but you still have to have a front plate. The cops are pretty mellow though. I have never run a front plate in 15 years of driving...unfortunately my dealer adds front plates to all the Maximas straight off the truck (not the Z's though) I found plastic plugs that fit the big'ol ugly screwholes they drilled into my bumper. Just painted them with touch up paint and waalaa, but like lightonthehill said "Very primitive, and totally unacceptable with those who demand perfection." Still bugs me because I see Max's without the holes...arrrghhh!!!
You can see very subtle bumps where the plugs are...but hardly noticeable!!

Texas issues 2 plates but as I understand only the rear is required. Subsequently I only run the rear plate. One of the other advantages of no front plate is you make it harder for police to target you with a RADAR/LASER gun because most aim for your plates.

I live in cali and i never have had the front plates on any of my cars. Luckily i got my max straight off the truck and specifically instructed the dealer not to put the holes in. I got a ticket for not having the front plate once (on my 02 altima) and it was like 25 dollars, which was also reduced to 10 dollars if you take a dated picture of your car with the plates put on and mail it in. I think the car looks a lot cleaner without the plates and the ticket fine isnt that too big of a deal here in cali if u ever do get it. BTW the cop didnt pull me over or anything, i was just parked on some random street one night and the ticket was there in the morning... o well still worth it.

I am in a one plate state now and it is great, no ugly bracket and never had one mounted as it is not required, now, the last base I was stationed at in Idaho, front plate was mandatory and the cops LOVED to pull you over for no front plate. Just glad it is nice and clean now with no plate required in MS, but next base I go to may require a front plate, will put one on ONLY if I have to. The cops do have a good reason for a 2 plate law though.

No buddy in Texas front and rear are required so if you get stopped by a pisse doff cop he may sweat you. I dont have them on my Max or 350 here in the DFW area and have'nt been sweated yet thank god but others have and we roam in the North D area all the time; Lewisville,Plano,Frisco and Carrollton all the time.

I know what you mean, depends on the cop, hell, in Idaho, I got a 65 dollar ticket for just a smoked FRONT licence plate cover over the plate. Was not a fix it ticket...just BAM....they lit me up and slapped me with a 65 dollar fine. Being origionally from Cali, that is a 2 plate state....gives them incentive to pull you over, add that in with a few other things....

Loud exhaust, fart pipes, neon, blue headlights, clear turn lights, stuff like that....all attracts attention of the cops, the more you have, more than likely you will be stopped....than, they bring on the tint meter. Hell, one thing leads to another. Really, for the honest answer, the laws vary by state and every cop is different. If you stand out too much, just like the lion looking for the one that stands out of the herd......you get what I mean.

I'm happy in my cheapo state. when our new plates were issued, a statement explained why we only have one plate in PA, would cost twice as much. I understand why many want 2, but think about it, how many crooks get away in reverse? and i guess we can argue about cops ability to run our plates for the heck of it. if they see a car/person matching APB, not that hard to get back plate.

Massachusetts switched to 2 plates a few years ago. I am one of the fortunate ones that have my original (green) plates from back when only 1 was required. I am therefore grandfathered and only require 1. I just keep transferring the plate from vehicle to vehicle as I buy new.

I plan on keeping this one until it desintigrates.

wow, with the PA change over, your new plate came in the mail when registration came making your old one invalid. And PennDOT would not transfer the old ones.

Learn something new everyday. I got pulled over by DPS in Waco and he didn't even look. Then again, why trip on a front plate when you're writing a $285 ticket for doing 102 in a 60?

Got a ticket this AM in Frisco from a newbie. He didn't know the speed limit and he wouldn't let me see the gun so it's safe to say I'll be beating this one. But he didn't look to see if I had a front plate.

only good thing about a front plate with a cover is if someone backs into you, they hopefully wont touch your bumper

Well, I saw a couple of you guys live in CA, and I need to let you know that it IS in the code book that you must have the front plate (it's the law). http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5200.htm
Refer to section a. Good luck if you continue w/o the fronts...my friend ('99 Mercury Cougar) does it too and hasn't been hassled, but I think I'll stick to the law on this one.

I live in NY which requires you to have a front plate, I have taken mine off, I put my EX Pass tag on the front bumper when I need it and sometimes leave in on in the summer.
