Winter Driving
Hi y'all!
I have an 04 Maxima SL (5-speed Auto). I found out this morning that my tires are a bit below the recommended pressure (32 psi). is that normal at this time of the year? (the temp this morning was 33deg) Should I inflate it to 32 psi? And what could be the consequences if I'll drive it without inflating it back to 32psi?
Also, any tips on winter driving?
Any advice will be appreciated.

joemax1 - welcome to the board!
Tires tend to very slowly lose air at all times of the year, and should be checked at least monthly (some check more often). But the big drop in pressure is when the weather turns cold. I've always heard the pressure in a tire drops a pound for every 10 degree drop in temperature. Mine drops at least that much when it turns cold.
You are driving an SL. Standard pressure in the SE is 32, but for the SL, it is 33 pounds. I carry 33 in the rear of my SL, but 35 in front, as that is where the weight is, where most braking occurs, where all pulling is done, and where most of the turning effort happens.
I would not suggest you carry less than 33 pounds on your SL. And that is with the tires either cold or nearly so. If you don't live near an air source, measure the air before you leave home, determine how many pounds you need in EACH TIRE to bring it up to 33.
Then when you arrive at the service station, add the needed pounds to each tire, no matter what the now-higher reading may be with your 'warm from driving' tires.
Good luck!

Hi Light!
Thanks for your reply. By the way, will it damage the rims if ever I drive my car with less air pressure on the tires? Like around 24-25 psi? Because that's what it read in the gauge yesterday morning after I drove the car for over 600 miles the past 3-4 days.
Any comment will be very much appreciated!
BTW, I like this forum! Verrry informative!
Thanks guys!

Conti tires are crap.. Trust me i know.. My father has worked for them for 20 years now.. he is pretty high up in the company and weekly reports from the R&D guys. These tires are very bad. Nissan is not to happy with General/Conti right now.. I was looking over my dads employee tire price. I can get a set of conti 18's for my SE maxima for about 80 bucks a pop but they are so bad my dad refuses to order them for me.. He also will not even put them on any of his cars..

mattman2003, are you complaining about Nissan b/c of your tire performance? You know they (like all manuf. sell cheap oem tires and) cannot provide warranty coverage for them? Yes I would file complaints with Nissan (dealers are NOT Nissan) so they will move to a different tire and may help you somehow. They "act" unaware of tire complaints b/c they do not receive them. Dealers automatically refer us to the tire manufacturer.
the car pulling you refer to, I assume is torque steer. if this bothers you:
a) buy a car with a lot less power
b)buy a RWD car.
for the shimmy, print the TSB and take to dealer to fix it.

Hey NismoMax!
you seem to know a lot about the Maximas. I just have one question. Actually, I posted this already but I wanna ask u straight: will it damage the rims if ever I drive my car with less air pressure on the tires? Like around 24-25 psi? Because that's what it read in the gauge yesterday morning (a very cold morning with temps at below 30's) and I drove the car for over 600 miles the past 3-4 days. (The temps during those 3-4 days was b/w 28 - 45 deg).
Thank u very much!

Everyone has their preference from way below to way over for different reasons. I just keep them at 32 psi when they are cold as recommended.
btw, which trim do you have? My SE psi is 32, SL is different.
-----------------------
So my question to light and others, since I had them at 32 "cold" psi when the mornings were 60 deg, then they would warm up and increase while driving....
now if I have them at 32 cold psi when it is 30 deg, will they be too high when they warm to driving temp?
----------
forgot to check my psi in over 2 weeks.... scared to drive it now, so I'll walk home and check them in the morning to ensure they are cold.....

No driving on 20psi of air pressure will not damage your rims.
