Windshield cracks / skyview recall
This skyview recall got me thinking... the same company makes the windshield, right? Well, my windshield has had a crack in it for a while, and I have no idea where it came from. Any chance it's a similar defect? Anyone else have this problem?

When we got our 04 delivered it had a small crack on the bottom passenger side said it was a installation problem from the factory, replaced it on warrenty. I called around even with the nav system the windshiled was only around $250 installed.

Does your crack also start from the bottom right? I just climbed in one day to find a crack, and there seemed to be nothing around that could have caused it.
BLKMAX, the windshield isn't under warranty, is it?
I'm wondering if I can get Nissan to repair it for free. I'm surprised that it's only $250 though.

We purchased the car from Oklahoma City Ok and they delivered it to Ft. Smith AR were we live tho we looked the car over we didn't notice it till we got in it to leave after the delivery people had left, I immediatly called the dealer contact and he said he would take of it said they have had other crack in the same spot (factory install crack) (yes from the bottom passenger side)They had the local Ft. Smith dealer fix it for us didn't cost us anything but because of the wait I called several local glass places and they quoted me $250 installed for the nav windshield, and yes I was surprized as I expected around $800
Take it to your dealer and see if they will fix it under warrenty doesn't hurt to ask...

Hmm... interesting. I asked last year, and they told me it wasn't under warranty. Now I live elsewhere, and I'm getting my sunroof replaced because of the recall. I'll ask if they'll take care of the windshield, but I can't imagine them saying yes.
I wish there were more people reporting this, so I might have a case to present the dealership/Nissan. Unfortunately, it looks as though I might have to fork over the $250.

Happy ending: I discussed it with the service folks. They said it was most likely caused by a rock, but I insisted that it happened while garaged and so that couldn't have been the case. The manager inspected it, and agrees it's a stress fracture. They're replacing it for free.
So anyone else out there with a cracked windshield, be wary before paying for it yourself!

Windshield cracks caused by road debris or other impact have a 'starting point'. I.e., a point at which something hit, and from which crack(s) radiate out. These are not covered by warranty, but by the 'comprehensive' section of your car insurance policy.
But be careful in making a claim against your car insurance. Each company is different, and some companies may count this as a 'claim' against your policy. That is definitely not good. Especially since, if you have a deductible, the payout could be very small.
A dealer fixing a crack caused by road dedris or other impact under warranty is doing so as a show of good customer relations.
'Stress' cracks have no 'starting point', and virtually always run in from the edge of the glass. Stress cracks are a result of either improper curing of the glass, an inexact fit of the glass to the windshield opening of the body, or a misalignment of the machine installing the glass, and ARE covered under warranty the first three years.
