Tire Pressure

I just have one question. Actually, I posted this already but I just wanna ask anybody who is not busy right now ( ) will it damage my RIMS if ever I drive my car with less air pressure on the tires? Like around 24-25 psi? Because that's what it read in the gauge yesterday morning (a very cold morning with temps at below 30's) and I drove the car for over 600 miles the past 3-4 days. (The temps during those 3-4 days was b/w 28 - 45 deg).

Thank u very much for your answer and for your time. I really appreciate it!

If you drive with the tire pressure lower you increase the change of bottoming out the tire on the rim which can indeed cause damage. Run the tires at the specified PSI unless the 25 PSI is a temporary thing (under 5 miles). You will wear out your tires faster too running them at 25 PSI!!!

And if you have an SE with 18's - at 25 you run a better chance of damaging a wheel if you hit a chuck-hole - 45 profile and 25 psi = not a good idea IMHO...

32 PSI should be just fine for you. My opinion, check on the sidewall of the tire for the Max tire pressure though as brands do very, pressure, over inflate or under inflate can cause tread wear problems. Actually, the owners manual will give you all the tire specs you need...if I remember, you can open up the center console and I think unless I ripped the sticker off, it said everything you need.

That's exactly what I did yesterday. Increase pressure to 32psi. but what about running at 24-25psi and hitting potholes? will it do damage to my rims?
thanks!

Stock:
SL tire pressure 33psi
SE tire pressure 32psi

Do NOT fill your tires to the max number on the side of the tire.

Hi! What is usually the max psi on a 17' rim?

and is it ok to over fill the tires when filling, then just take out the excess?

Thanks

The rim side does not dictate that max pressure at tire can take. The tire does. Yes you can over fill, but don't go nuts. If you want 33psi don't put 40 in.

Make sure you have a good tire guage. Check the tire pressure in the AM. Note each tire. Drive to station and add air appropriatly. ie say if the front right has 30psi in it, you need to add 3 psi to what ever the reading is when you get to the station.

Thanks! The reason I asked is because I inflated my tire awhile ago and then checked the gauge. it read about 38psi, then I took out the excess and stopped at 33 psi. is that ok?

Yes as long as the tire is cold. If you did this with a hot tire your tires are underinflated

this should become a Sticky: Maintenace 101

[Joe, is this your first car ever? or maybe just the first one you cared about?]

...once gas pump stops, do not fill it anymore...
...when it reads "E" you actually have 4 gallons left, but should get gas as soon as convienent...
...best to use premium, but if feeling the need to save $, stick with the mid-grade. Do Not Switch back and forth...
...leave the A/C on even in the winter, just increase temp...
...do not turn HIDs on/off excessively...
...warm car by driving under 2k RPM until temp needle is at the middle...
...when others flash you, your lights are fine, they're just jealous of our pretty HIDs...
...Love your car, it deserves it...

hey! Thanks man! I really appreciate it! And you're right. THIS IS MY 1ST CAR! And I really like this one! My wife drives a 01 Altima, but I like mine better...hehehehe...
And to be really stupidly honest? I don't know much about cars! I know a whole lot about the human body and all it's parts (cos I'm a physical therapist) but not a car! So that's why I know I sound like an idiot when I asked all those questions on the forum. But I hope you guys won't mind...do you?

I gotta disagree with this. The car starts up at close to 2000K RPM, it is almost impossible to get this car to stay under 2K RPM before it's warmed up. That is unless you're driving 5mph.

hey maxmus, i gotta ask u this for some peace of mind... I place air in my tire this AM and when I checked the pressure right after, I found out it almost went up to 40 psi. so I took the excess air out until it reached the recommended psi. will that hurt my tire? the excess air pressure?
thanks a lot!

I don't know how your car is, but my Max idles at 900, 1200 if really cold at first. I can get to 5th gear by barely going over 2k, definetly no higher than 3k. I have cruised at 100 with the tach at 3k.

5mph? that's less than 1k for me.

well what I do is wait till the "needle" in the engine temp go up just a little bit (usually in 2 minutes) then start running at abt 2k rpm. Mine also goes to abt 1200 rpm when I start it esp during this cold season.
