Engine Startup

My Max is about 3 weeks old (1200 miles). When starting up after the car has been sitting for a while, the engine RPM's shoot up between 3000 & 4000 w/out even putting the foot on the gas peddle. I don't recall the engine revving that much on startup on my last maxima ('96 SE), or any other car for that matter. Is this normal and/or good for the engine?

Haven't seen that with mine, or heard of anyone else having that problem... I will say though that on cold mornings, just after the engine has turned over and is starting to settle down to about 1.4K RPM or so, there will be a momentary "rattle" or buzz... it's very sporadic, and the dealer so far hasn't been able to duplicate it (I think they tried to start it up in the warmer afternoon, and since it wasn't cold enough thoguht I was nutes...).

Since you are still well within warranty, I'd take it in to the dealer... if it happens with any regularity, then they should be able to replicate it.

All the new 6th Gens do it. When starting the 04/05 MAX, the engine "brain" automatically kicks it into full throttle when it first growls to life. That's just the way it's designed...it should only happen for a quick second or two. After this, it should idle to about 1.5 - 2K RPM, depending on how long the car has been sitting and what temperature the car's engine is exposed to...then after a minute or so, it'll kick back down to about 750 RPM...it'll take a little longer to reach that normal idling speed if it's colder outside. If it kicks up to 3 - 4K RPMs for more than that quick second or two, then I'd say you have a problem... Keep us informed...

My '04 does exactly like hofb99's. It startled me at first, but now, knowing it will rev back down quickly, it doesn't bother me. I very carefully avoid dropping into any gear until the 'big rev' subsides. Only takes two or three seconds.
