Glove Box
Glove Box
I used to have an 04 Max and I had the glove box adjusted as indicated in the TSB. I now have a new 05 Silver Max SE and the Glove box issue seems unresolved. I took the car in for the 05 Air bag sensor recall and had a few minor things corrected on the car...The dealer said that the TSB on the 04 glove box does not apply and that there are no further adjustments that are applicable to the 05 yet my 05 glove box is worse than it was on the 04.... What's going on here? Is this true?
Call up 1-800-NISSAN-1 and complain to them. Ask to get in touch with a regional/zone rep. Take some digital photos if possible and email them over to the regional/zone rep. If you bark loud enough up the right tree they will fix the issue. Never take no for an answer.
I really frustrates me that after a full year of production Nissan is still having a problem in the second year release. This really scares me.

How bad is all the gloveboxes that everyone is complaining about....my is a tad off but I can live with it.....why let the dealership try to fix something sooo little....everything is man-made nothing ever perfect.
Every '04 and '05 Maxima glove box door I have seen seems to be exactly alike. Simply replacing the door does not usually fix much of anything. I saw a few few '04s needing an adjustment to the attachments holding the door. But only a very few.
The problem I consistently see on '04 Maximas is that the right edge of the door seems to stick out a tad too far, especially at the top, so it doesn't look even with the dash. Although not as noticable, the upper left corner often is slightly recessed into the dash.
My SL had that problem, and, after thinking about it, I knew the solution was to somehow pull the upper left corner out, which would result in the upper right corner being pulled back into the dash.
Nissan figured the same thing, and, as a result, produced a longer black rubber nipple to replace the one at the upper left corner of the glovebox opening, resulting in a ninely fitting door. My door now fits perfectly.
The longer nipple is part number 68399-7Y000. It probably costs a dime to make, and Nissan will pay for the installation (which is easy).

Its a warranty repair. I tried to get the parts from dealer but they would not allow me to get them (didn't thinnk of trying online) as its a warranty claim for them (hence $$ hour).
Personally, NO Glovebox should be sold this way. They all fit flush in Hondas and Toyotas...etc. (cept Dodge.. :P ).
And I too, had scratched box after dealer did the 2nd fix. Plus annoying caveat, they had left the seats down and everything out of adjustment. but they did put the usual 'seat condoms' on and the paper mat (which I had to discard).
I guess I got spoiled at Audi/VW/Porsche dealership.
Atleast the Maxima starts, and "bolts" to where I gotta go.

joemax1 - Have your service manager order the part (68399-7Y000) and call you when it comes in. I don't think you will find it anywhere except Nissan. The tech will simply pull the OEM short black rubber nipple from its hole in the upper left corner of the glove box opening, lubricate the base of the new longer nipple (so it will slide into the now empty hole), jam it in using a small screwdriver tip, then do the paperwork to have Nissan pay for it.
Had the longer nipple not been available from Nissan, I was going to make one on my own, which would probably have taken some astute whittling.

joemax1 - I haven't experienced the rear shelf rattle, but many here have. There are threads about it, with all kinds of 'solutions', some as bizarre as stuffing a towel in the offending area. Others have forced little strips of common household felt door insulation between the high mounted brake light and the rear window. I will let you read thru those threads and decide which seems to fit your problem best.
As to the hood gap, I am puzzled. The hood should not be changing positions while the car is moving (or while it is stopped, either). If you are talking about a 'fluttering', there are cylindrical black rubber devices inside both front corners of the hood that enable you to make the hood exactly flush with the fenders. If the hood is fluttering, one of these devices needs to be adjusted (by simply turning it) so it makes contact with the contact plate below. I adjusted mine just last week. But I have not seen any hood gap change while driving. I think that would scare me. Maybe you can describe this problem in more detail?
