23,000 and I need new front brakes???

I had an oil change and the stealership told me that my front brakes has 20% left. I couldnt believe this. Last night I rotated my tires at my friends garage and we confirmed that they are running low. I do all highway driving too! This is nuts. Has anybody else experience this crap? How much are the brakes to order from Nissan? are they hard to put on?

Thanks

Chris;
I do not know how much the break pads are from Nissan, but in my opinion, if you are going to pay a rediculous ammount of money for pads from the dealer, you are better searching around for better quality pads from other sources. You will get more for your money.

Anyone correct me if i am wrong.

Most dealers love to say your brake linings need replacement (and often rotors too) well before they actually need them. Why? The work is easy as gravy, the profits are high due to ease, and the chances of be-back redos are low. Trust me, an independent service tech told me this and he told me he can do brake jobs all day long and make great money. If you look at Car and Driver's long-term tests, most cars have extrapolated front brake lining life to well past 50,000 miles, sometimes close to 80,000 miles. And they do a mix of long highway runs, city driving on, and certainly put the car through its paces to get a complete editorial picture.

In your case, your friend confirmed the rare instance when the pads are actually low and at early mileage for given driving conditions. I wonder about part brake pedal pressure biasing on that car. Do you notice an especially quick rate after you clean your front wheels, the wheels getting dirty again???

suggestion...go to autopartspeople.com...a must for your maxima parts..i have 31k and just had my rotors turned and resurfaced...at the dealer and they said that my pads were fine......go to the website and you can order official nissan maxima parts for a lot cheap than the dealer.....brakes are easy to do...but you could order from autopartspeople.com and take them to someone to put on....
