Radar detectors in a Gen 6 Maxima?

Who has them, where do you mount them, and what do you recommend for a radar/laser detector?

I just know I have a ticket coming, and I'd like to avoid it if possible. Pictures will be helpful, but if not then no biggie.

Thanks!

[QUOTE=Maxium]Nevermind, found my answer here :

Jay, I mounted mine over on the far left of the dash, just to the right of the A pillar. A strip of velcro on the curved part of the dash rim holds my Passport 8500 snugly. The bonus is that in Texas, we have a required inspection sticker and the license tag sticker in that corner, so they hide the detector from sight unless someone looks in just right.

I know you're supposed to mount the detector as high as possible, but I don't like the use of my visor blocked by it, and there's no way to mount it up there without doing so. Mine have worked fine on the dash for years.

Thanks Mike! I'll be picking one up soon... I'm coming from driving a Jeep Wrangler Soft top to a new Maxima, so the noise level is 100 times quiter, needless to say I find myself speeding because I'm use to judging my speed by the sound of the wind against the Jeep... Recently I was doing just about 100mph until I looked down and noticed my speed -- whoa! In which case I slowed down to about 70mph in a 65mph zone, and boy, didn't I feel like I was just moving along at a snails pace. I'm really liking the new Maxima, so to be safe I really need to get a radar detector.

Will a radar detector really make you more "safe"?? lol

Wouldn't paying more attention to your speed and driving habits result in increased safety for you? More so than a radar detector anyways.

Boy, I can't resist this one ... Radar detectors detect radar. :

But seriously folks, they are nothing but receivers that pick up the signals from police radar (and laser, if so equipped). There are different kinds of radar in use by police, but they all require that a beam of microwave energy be directed at your car to determine your speed. The detector "hears" that burst of energy and makes a warning sound. If you get the warning soon enough, you can check your speed and slow down if need be.

Some radar is always "on" and other kinds can be instantly turned on by the policeman to check your speed. The second type doesn't give you much (if any) warning, so detectors aren't foolproof.

The range of a detector depends on lots of things, like the terrain, the angle at which the radar is coming at you, etc., but in general, a good detector will give you an average of about 1/4-1/2 mile advance warning. Sometimes more. And of course sometimes less, especially in the case of "instant-on" radar.

Face it - any warning you get is better than no warning!

Whoa! Comments like that just shows you really don't know me at all, and thanks for asking, but since I'm the noob around here I'll be the first to step up to the plate. I have been driving for over 17 years now, and of those 17 years I have never had a speeding ticket... I have had a few seat belt violations, and a few parking tickets, but never speeding ticket... eww, wait! I did have one warning.... BUT no ticket (yet). So... I guess I consider myself a defensive driver, which brings me to the radar detectors. Please understand I'm no punk out for joy rides or anything, I’m more the responsible type. I have family to care for, a spouse and a slew of other responsibilities to my community. I suppose when I wrote this thread my point was to obtain information, and maybe in my second post was to illustrate how driving a Maxima is a huge improvement from driving this:

As the owner of a Offroad club, called the Maryland Creepers Inc. I teach responsible wheeling on the trails; I'd also expect to adhere to the same on the road. Well... With that said, this is my rig above, and it makes all kinds of noise driving at 55mph, which honestly feels like 100mph with the big tires, 5.5” lift, drive line vibes, and a butt load of other things. Wrangler takes on a whole other meaning for me as I literally wrestle this thing down the roads as a daily driver - really it's not that bad, and yes it passed inspections.

Trust me when I say I'm not looking to break the law. I'm just looking for a good early warning system such as a radar detector to remind me that I should be doing the speed limit, and paying attention. Last thing I want to do is take on a speeding ticket, and ruin my blemish free record.

Mentality? Nah, you should check another forum if you're looking for that.

jammer

Most radar detectors can be turned into jammers. Although they "receive" radar and laser energy, they all have oscillators in them. Oscillators transmit rf energy. The problem is the waveguides in radar detectors do not allow rf energy from the oscillators to escape. However, a few minor mods to the waveguide and your detector can jam (transmit rf). As far as lasers, best way to defeat them is with absorbing material and/or edncoding the return signal. You can spend alot of time with countermeasures, but I would recommend you just watch your speed.
