Trim Problems / Chrome Wearing ?
Trim Problems / Chrome Wearing ? **UPDATED**
I just picked up my new 04 Max the other week. I have noticed after my first detail that the trim on the roof is all faded and looks like it has a film on it. I tried hitting it with a bit of chrome polish but it hardly works and it scratched the trim. You can see in the picture my finger nail mark where the "film" was kinda' scrapped off but no where near the level of the rear window trim luster. I know it's probably plastic and this is from the sun. Has anyone heard of this happening or had it happen to them? I plan on going to the dealership next weekend as I am going out of town this weekend. I know it's new but it has been out on the lot for some time I assume being an 04 but it's not THAT old you know?

I noticed the same thing next to my windshield. If you're going to wax your car, I suggest not touching the silver trim. It will probably wear off whatever that cheap silver coating is. It's not exactly chrome. I bought my max used and noticed that a section of mine is faded to a black. I will see if the dealership will cover this.
they forgot to remove the plastic film. make them do it b/c it is very difficult. I watched my salesman do it very slowly and carefully. didn't even notice it until I had her for ahile and first detailed everything, there was a line where it began. if you scratch or mar, the chrome: you're stuck. If they do, they'll replace it.
The shipping plastic is not easy to remove. I noticed in March of 2003 when the first gen 6s were arriving at my dealer that two Maximas had bad scratches on the silver-colored roof strips from improper removal of the shipping plastic. They learned quickly, and I never saw them mess up that process again.
As your '04 Maxima has sat out in the weather at least six months (Nissan switched to assembling '05s in July of 2004), the plastic might be harder than normal to remove. Warn them up front that any scratched (or otherwise damaged) piece becomes 'theirs' (you will be getting a new one at their expense).

This is not a plastic film. A forum member recently emailed me and said:
I'll check with the dealership next weekend for sure. I have been to busy to get down there.
Stopped by the dealership today and after the service person examining the trim, he said that there was not any type of plastic film that was not removed. They are ordering another chrome strip to replace both sides...of course, covered under warranty. I would take yours back and have them look at it and replace the parts if there is not a plastic film.
Has to be the plastic coating. The dealer didn't take it off of mine. I didnt know it was there until I stoppped to get some gas and someone told me that it was hanging from the passenger side. Talking about embarrassing. I was like "...yeah...just had that replaced....thanks"
I've lost about an inch of chrome on the end of the drivers side strip at the back edge. The darn thing keeps peeling back a little more and a little more as time goes by. I'll have them look at replacing it in the spring. No sense bothering with this kind of stuiff during the winter. It would seem that this chrome strip is not all that durable.

I wanted to update everyone on the chrome trim. I brough the car in today for the first time since purchase and the looked at the trim and said it was bad without hesitation. My waraanty covered everything (and the fact that it's brand new i assume). Her eare some pics.
