Help! Need your advice ASAP
Hey guys. My weeks been pretty hectic, and now this happens to me. Anyway i go out to lunch and i notice that my gas is a bit low, lower than usual. I look at the DTE display and it says 18 miles till empty, so i say no biggie, i will fill er up after work. When i get back from lunch, i glance at the DTE and it has an asterisk instead of an number (*). I turn off the car right away in the parking lot. Now , normally when i fill er up it only takes 16 gallons tops, even when its empy, its just never been this empty... Shouldnt i still have about 4 gallons to complete the 20 gallon tank spec? Should i risk it and have somebody bring me some gas, or should i try to make it to the nearst gas station after work, which is about 2 miles away. Im cant believe im stressiing over this, i guess thats what i get for neglecting my car this week.. any suggestions?
calm down....breathe....relax.....
/*/ is supposed to be there. DTE does not calculate all 20. that would defeat the purpose of "reserve"
It only calculates the 16 gallons the guage reflects.
the miles left is estimated by your recent MPG. if you hit the gas hard, it will show a lower DTE.

idnumber1 - In truth, you could probably go almost a hundred miles after the * appears. But there are many reasons (discussed here many times) you would not want to do that. Running out of gas in the 6th gen Maxima can be a very expensive mistake.
Once you go more than around 50 miles after the * appears, you run the risk of sucking in pollutants that have been floating on top of the gas. More miles than that risk much more costly problems.
But, in emergency situations, there should be no problem caused by going another few dozen miles after the * appears.
