23K Trans is gone

What a shame. Sorry guys but this car is the worst. 2 years owned, at the dealer plenty of times. I admit car is great when it runs right but it's time for me to bail. Car is going for sale when I get it back.

Sorry to hear of your trannie problem. You don't say, but I'm certain its an Auto Trannie. This is one of the reasons I went for the 6 speed manual. You have to be a dunce to wreck a manual trannie.

Auto trannies have a lot of work to do, and they don't get the best treatment, what with max acceleration and torque with quick shifts. The must stand heat and torque. They are wonderful until the crap out on you.

My experience with the Trannie in this has been rock solid. I push it hard all the time, rarely am I not leaving a stop sign/light not at or nearly at full tilt. When I hit 10 over the speed limit I come off of full tilt and maintain speed. I have also cruised at 135 a few times for several miles each. I guess the only harmfull thing I haven't done is abuse it by keeping it floored with a tire or both spinning (I live where there is no snow or ice to speak of). That will ruin a transmission.

And mine has been in the shop for problably about 2 weeks worth of time in the year I have had it trying to get some things straightened out. Mainly a driving noise, floor board snapple top spots, and most recently a bad strut. But I must admit I have noticed the snapple top affect on more than just the Max and on other makes. The road noise was fixed under warranty, but one of the front brackets holding the muffler had cracked probably because it got hit by something. This one is the one it has spent most of its time in the shop for trying to find it. The 2nd dealer I took it to found it on the first visit. The blown strut was found on the second visit, and will be replaced next week.

All in all not out of the ordinary stuff for a first year model and first year new plant on top of that.

I drive the car gingerly 90% of the time too...reading this makes me glad I bought new, because i wouldnt want a car thatsbeen pounced on daily, I guess this is food for thought. I dont think its the car, I bet if you drive any car hard for 20k++ you risk failure of some kind. Look at race engines, why do you think everything is torn down after every race? After I threw a piston in my old car at 90k I learned a lesson.

Oh its that blue one? I liked how you painted the grille body matched, i tried to do it myself, it came out, then got chipped terrible so i got a trenz...did u have a shop do it? Well, all I can say is you got unlucky then i guess, anything can happen, no batch of cars in a lineup is all perfect im sure. Too bad after you put stuff into the car too.

I'm sorry for the misfortune you had with the transmission. I don't have many miles on my car (approx. 7K), but have not had any problems yet. I plan to keep the car a long time and have been trying to take better care of it and drive it more conservatively that I have my previous cars. I appreciate that you said that you didn't drive the car hard. As far as I know, the 6th gen. transmissions have not been a particular problem. Perhaps you just got a bad situation through ill luck.

It would be interesting to hear what you go with instead of a Maxima.

I drove a 97 525i a couple years ago to see how it was. 40k on it and it felt great behind the wheel, heavy...balanced, just perfect. Its definately the finest driving sedan Ive ever driven, even better than the E class.

But when the BMW trans does fail....get the check book ready....or a small business loan.

I have about 23k on my car as well... you didn't mention whether yours is a manual or auto. Mine's a manual, and I push it all the time. Don't do anything crazy like full power shifting or anything, but I frequently push it above 4k RPMs, and I've had zero trouble.

Heck, I haven't even had the thing in the shop except for one odd rattle at 2100 RPMs which was fixed in like an hour.

If you think a 4 year old BMW is going to give you fewer headaches than a brand new Nissan, you're insane. And those headaches are going to cost you an arm and a leg. My father had a used BMW and chucked it after only about 9 months, due to spending $500-$1500+ in repairs every other month.

In my family I have 4 BMW's. They do have a couple of issues but none major. Like I said my dad's best friend specializes in BMW and we pay penny's for problems. We have a 525 with 140,000 a 740IL with 110,000 a 3 series with 60,000 and an X5 with ?? miles. All the cars are solid and have limited problems. I counted my reciepts yesterday from nissan and had 21 visits to the dealership. Tried the lemon law and didnt work. I had nissans all my life a 1993 SE, no problems, 1998 SE which was stolen and now this piece of ****. Im ready to move on. Still think the car is awesome despite the problems. I must be crazy.

I'd ditch that piece of crap too. You've been unlucky enough to have one of the many lemons that the 6th gen has cranked out.

The BMW will be nice, but I hope your friend gives great deals, because all I hear about bmws is repair bills.

I really wish I could give it one more chance but you have to understand I am so fed up. Also lemon law is very hard to get, I know first hand.

Car Fixed,new tranny

Like I said, this dealer I went to was awesome, best service ever. Had a loaner waiting for me, car done in less then a week. Still want to get rid of it but I have second thoughts now. The car feels great with the new tranny.. I think I may have had problems for a while because the car never drove this good. If you guys live in New Jesey, the place is All Brands Nissan, hackensack NJ. The man to speak to is Glenn.

Did the tranny give you any indications before going out? I've always noticed that mine isn't nearly as smooth as another 6th gen I test drove, (with some occaisonal weird noises/hard shifts), but after nearly 20K miles it hasn't died yet.

Thanks
