3rd brake light removal

Well, I bit the bullet and decided to have my rear window retinted because the knucklehead tint guy decide to just cut out for the third brake light and it looks like junk. He was nice enough to wave the $50 removal fee (of the crap job he did originally) and will only charge me $120 to redo the back window (I paid $240 total the first time around ?!@*). Believe me, I am not happy about paying $360 total to tint my windows and then basically being kicked in the bag - it's OK, I'll burn his business verbally around town. Anyways, my question is: To pop the 3rd brake light out, can I just use a flat head screwdriver and do I need to disconnect anything? The tint shop "isn't a mechanic shop," so I have to take this apart myself. I just don't want to break anything. Thanks in advance for any help.

PS. Steer clear of Window Film Specialists in Green Bay, WI if you ever decide to get a tint job in the north woods

Wow, for the price of the original job he should redo the back for free. If he doesn't know how to take apart the 3rd brake light, he should be doing tints. Does he take off the door panels? When they tinted my car, they took those off too...so the tint won't peel or roll up from window usage.

Anyway, I think that the 3rd brakelight just pops off. Pull it from the back towards you to the front. I'm not 100% sure of this but, I think that it explains it in the manual.

Good Luck.

Sorry about the bad tint job, I went through the same thing, guy used the heat gun and melted the top of the drivers side door trim. Luminar tint...but the install is still not the best. Got 300 bucks cash back from him though and a re-tint. He did not want to pay the 500 bucks or so from the dealer for a new door panel.

Mine is tinted behind the 3rd brake light. Not sure how it is removed, but imagine it is simple. I am interested also as my 3rd brake light buzzes alot with the sub in the back and want to figure out some way to quiet it down. Someone posted once here how to remove it. Been a while though.

Removal is basically just pull up a bit on the back of it (nearest the seat back) and slide it towards the inside of the car. It should pop right out. The cable is hard to disconnect. Its on a quick disconnect. I found the tab hard to press down to release the connector.

I had my windows tinted last week and rememberred the posts of Maximizers who got a hack job around the third light. Someone was nice enough to post that you just press on the back of the third light towards the rear of the car and lift up. I removed mine before they tinted the windows and the guy covered the whole back window. Looks really good.

Guys...check your car manual...it explains how to do it there for the purpose of cleaning the rear window...to include behind the third brake light. I found it in my 2005 manual. If needed, I'll look it up and type in the exact wording if someone can't find it...
