Will Tinting Rear Glass Affects Side Mirrors

Will tinting rear glass affect the performance of the side mirrors with auto dimming capabilities?

It should... if the sensor is in the rearview, so if it gets less light it doesn't know to dim the mirrors as much.

But then again, you're also tinting your side windows, so you'll get less light into the cabin anyway...

Unless you go REALLY dark, it should still work though. I went 35% in the rear and I still need to keep the mirror "on" -- and like I said, if you go really dark all around then you'll probably not notice it, since a lot of the light will be blocked by the tint on the side windows.

Are the side mirrors supossed to dim also? My rear view does but the sides don't.

I have 30/20 tint on the Max and the auto-dim works fairly well. I have noticed that regular halogen lamps get closer before the function begins to work.

I believe the 05's have auto-dim side mirrors STANDARD. It wasn't an option in '04

Ditto...

Seems every so often a car can sneak up behind me at a light and the mirrors (all of them) are late to dim. No biggie though, they work as advertised 95% of the time.

Yes, the sides are standard on the 05. (with one of the packages? Sensory?)

I know it will affect the inside mirror for sure. What I really am not sure is if this will affect the side mirrors. My Max has side mirrors that also dim. Where is the dimming sensor for the side mirrors, or they depend on the sensor of the rear view mirror?

As I said above;
mirrors (all of them) are late to dim
They use the same sensor located in the rear view.
Want proof? Cover the sensor (car running) on the back of the rearview, well, actually the front, lol. (the side that faces forward), it's on the drivers side of the mirror. All the mirrors will go black.

Some a$$hole trucker turned his high beams on me. I barely noticed. What a pu$$y. Wonder what he would have done if he wasnt in his big safe truck.

wont they go all black (dim) when you get shined by car lights? if you block the sensor, it will think that nothing is shining light towards it. Maybe I'm missing my logic right now & thinking like a BLONDE cause I came off a 12 hour shift...Please correct me

They tend to do that don't they..? I dont really see the big deal about side dimming mirrors. The rear view does it. Im "fully tinted" and I have no problem's.

What about if you turn on the map light. I noticed my mirror goes almost black when that happens... having someone look at a map or something with the light on will cause your outside mirrors to darken. I dont think that is very safe. I think these auto dimming mirrors are overrated. I always turn mine off I just dont like it

I've never seen that happen actually. To each his own I guess, but I love the mirrors.

Good discussion, I had the same question as originally posted. Forgot about the fact that the side tinting would decrease the amount of light from the mirrors, so not much of a worry with respect to autodimming. The only other thing stopping me from tinting the back window (the sides are a given) is the amount of "lines" etc where, in my past experiences, the tint doesn't stick that well and has a kind of silver appearance. How do you like your back window tint?

Mine came out really well actually. Surprising.
About the side mirrors dimming? The couple of times they didn't dim just re-enforced why I like them so much. On our previous (Jeep GJL) car only the rear-view and driver's side dimmed, allowing the passenger side mirror to still blind me. IMHO, without all the mirrors dimming, it's a waste to have the feature at all. YMMV.
