New Max Owner :)

Hi Everyone,

I am a proud owner of a '05 Max. SE. and I have to say that I love it. Even my fiance who is a jeep lover through and through will use every excuse in the book so she can drive it!

Anyway, I have about 1600 miles on her and have been trying to take it easy. However, my big gripe is gas mileage. I am only getting 16.3 mpg city driving. That seems awfully low even if I was using cheap gas.

I'm looking for any advice, thoughts or comments on how to improve this because I think the Max could do a tad better than 16.3. Even my fiance's jeep gets 19 in the city.

Thanks!!!!!!!

William

welcome. the gas is complicated. you have to reset it when you go on the highway so you can get the actual reading of you gas miles. you also have to reset it when you drive on city streets. if you take the overall it would be low. I think i have 17 or so. my 04 get better miles than my 02 did..I had to fill my 02 every 3 days, and my 04 once a week...

if your car is shaking when braking, your rotors are probably warped. Had mine resurfaced once and they need it again but I'm over the 12k mark so I'll wait until I can afford it. Bring it somewhere else and have them check it. The "shimmy" everyone talks about is the steering wheels shaking from side to side around 60-65mph. Mine was good for a while but started acting up again last week. Gotta check the pressure tomorrow and go from there.

welcome wrz0170. yeah like tek says i also average 17mpg between highway and city driving. i never reset it, im too lazy too. i know i need gas once a week so the mileage dosen't really affect me any. just take er easy on the gas and you'll tend to save it. today was the first day i had to fill up in 2 weeks and it only took $30 even @ $2.23 a gallon.

After few months and 4k miles I'm getting on average 19.3... the best MPG ratio I had was about 22 or 23, but I saw it once or twice while driving on highway.

EDIT: I got these numbers using "Fuel Economy" button.

.. reset it two tanks ago, after I stopped driving it so much...
In Dallas traffic (I35 stop and go and then many stop lights 26 mile round trip each day), she (wife) is averaging 20.5 (with premium). We'll see what she gets with middle grade, (89 I believe) when gas prices cause me to get a second mortgage. I've seen 29 mpg over a few hundred highway miles.

That mpg, in that traffic, in THAT car, is impressive if not surprising. And yes, she does like to put her foot in it now and then.

I am getting around 29.5 on highway (50-65mph), 27 interstate (70-80mph), 17.5 in the city. That is a mighty big drop and I take it easy on the throttle. The on board system is not completely accurate (at least mine is not). I find it off by about 1.5-2 miles pr. gallon with both the city and highway. So you might want to try it the old fashion way on couple of trips.

Trade it while you have a chance

I have a 2004 which began to fall apart at around 3000 miles. Unfortuantely I understand the 2005's are not much better. Bad brake rotors, insufficient spring rate and an inferior rack and pinnion unit do not show their ugly heads until the vehicle breaks in and loosens up. Steering wheel shimmy, brakes constantly warping themselves, alignment issues, abnormal tire wear, and the vehicle can't transport 4 people safely. I am have my lemon hearing next week. Oh the Radio works great by the way.

Wow, wrz! 16.3 mpg sucks!! I average about 20.3 mpg and I do pretty much all city driving. I run 91 octane or above.

I have the 05 Sl with less than 2k miles on it. I use Sunoco Ulta only and get an avarage 15 MPG. I don't mind it because I get 7 in my other car :P Congrats on your new ride!

Well,I finally done it, after lurking in this forum for the last 2 years. Just ordered a 2005 SE pewter/black leather. Salesman called to tell me it should be in next week. Got it for $3100 CDN below sticker price.
Any advice on what to check for when i pick it up?

My MAX has been pretty consistent even @ over 14K miles. I'm averaging 16 - 17 mpg around city (D.C. traffic is unforgiving), and when I reset the 'FUEL ECON' button as soon as I hit the interstate, I get an amazing 28 - 29 mpg as advertised by Nissan. Of course, I have the tendency to hit the higher range of speeds when on the highway, so the mileage starts dwindling down to 25 - 26 mpg... But, all-in-all, the MAX has been consistent. The VQ35 hates driving around town! But she absolutely loves the open road!!!

keep in mind that the car calculates MPG the entire time the engine is running. This means that when you are at a stop, the computer is still ticking away averaging that 0 mpg while you sit there. You can see this in action by resetting the MPG when you are going to be in city traffic for awhile, and after a few mins rolling when it has a chance to put up a number, watch it as you sit through a full cycle at a light. You can watch the average drop down before you very eyes every 20 secs or whatever the interval is. It's only that dramatic shortly after a reset as it doesnt have much info yet. The longer between resets, or the more info it has in other words, the tighter the range and less movement you will see.

I think stops are a really major factor with the average MPG display showing low numbers.
