im at about 2200 miles.. averaging about 18mpg. according to the sticker.. lowest should be somewhere around 22 in the city.. so i tested the car out.. drove to disneyland and back and in the end.. i was getting 18 mpg. i went beserk does anyone else have this problem? whats your mileage and the average mpg you guys getting?

 

When I drive all highway i get about 24mpg, and when I drive all city I get about 20. It varies a lot based on whether i'm doing "spirited" driving or not.

If you reset the trip computer your reading may be different because I think it calculates all your driving into the average mpg since day one or whenever you last reset.

Maybe check your tire pressure to make sure its not too low?

Even if everything is done "normally" the manufacturer mpg rating is usually over rated.

 

I am right at your exact mileage with my '05. I made a 750 mile trip last week, all interstate driving, premium gas, 80 mph and got 28 mpg. The highest mileage indicated by the display was in the 22-23 mpg range. Until I filled up, I was somewhat disappointed but when I calculated the mileage and discovered what mpg I was really getting, I was pretty satisfied. Previously I drove a V6 Camry and got in the 28-30 mpg range, once the engine was broken in.

 

Are you resetting your fuel button regularly?

 

or have you tried to calc. your avg. mpg the old fashioned way? (miles since last fill up)/(# of gallons at this fill up)

you know to get the "estimated" MPG advertised (~20 city) and (~29 hwy), you need to accelerate slowly and deccerate gradually? you need to stay as close to 2k RPM as you possibly can which means staying under 60 mph. and of course the more you idle, the more you get 0 mpg.

it requires more fuel when you have lead in your foot.

 

With the way i drive, i don't attempt to get high mpg. On average 20-23 for the most part. Though there was that one time i got 99.9.....Not sure what caused that, obviously a computer error.

I have mostly highway miles, driving from NY to NJ at least 3 times a week. But then the city miles do add up with driving for work for most of the week.

 

Its commensurate with my driving...If I drive lightly (have been lately for $2.40 a gallon) I peak at 25MPG mostly city. If I floor it on occasion, I notice it dropps to about 21..never lower than that though.
Ill try it the old fasioned way too...but my maxima takes small sips of 93 all of the time by the calculations of the computer, im happy with it. I do reset it sometimes and sometimes I dont...but It always ends up around 24-25

Dont know about you all, but I didnt get this car to go slow and get the best gas mileage. I enjoy getting on it, not absurd tire screeching or excessive speeds, but just revving it up and feeling the power. Its feels GOOD!

i drive mine around the city and on highway. I have just hit 30K and I am consistantly getting 27+. I do reset my trip meter every fill up. Which grade gas do you use?

 

I check it periodically, and it's ALWAYS at 20.7.......I think once, it may have hit 21 or above.

I do almost all city driving and I also get about 20.5 to 20.9 mpg. My foot is made of mostly lead (not all lead) so I'm not surprised at my gas mileage. I know that if I were a ton more easy on it, I could probably get her up to 22 mpg in the city. Also, it's just starting to warm up around here so my mileage should be going up a bit.

 

When I had under 10k miles in my car I was averaging about 18-20mpg. Now that I have over 25k miles on my car I am averaging about 22mpg. With the way gas prices are these days I guess anything under 20mpg would be unacceptable. When i first got my car I was worried because the best I would get would be 17mpg. Now things have changed so I am a happy camper. For those looking for 28+mpg may I suggest one of those ugly looking Honday hybrids!!!

 

I reset the MPG in the trip computer when I got the car about 1500mi or so ago. It indicates 25.2mpg with about 50/50 city and highway driving. Out of the highway driving, about half is 75-80 on the interstate and half 60 or so on 50mph back roads. This is with the 6spd.

 

My Nav says less than 18, actually 15.

 

Here's the deal...If you reset your fuel economy at every refill at the station you will get a pretty good estimation of your gas mileage for up to that instant for your gas tank.

The EPA has the car rated from 17-23 in the city and 23-33 on the highway.
If you also reset your trip computer you should see what your avg MPH is. If you do 20MPH or under you can expect to get in the low range of the city limit.

If you do 20-35 MPH avg you can expect 20-22 MPG
45-55 You will get some where around 25MPG
56-65 you should get the optimum 30 MPG anything faster than that you will end up dropping to 28MPG

75-100 don't expect to get better than 26MPG

That is what I have noticed from all different types of driving I have done over the past year.

 

When I replaced the y-pipe, my mileage seemed to drop about 20% for some reason. I have gotten excellent mileage on the highway beofre - high 20's. Now, Im not so sure. Who cares, its a great car to drive and sounds awesome.

 

it's because the back pressure has changed and your car relies on that back pressure for the best fuel economy.

 

Less backpressure=less low end torque, right?

 

i get 24 on a 60/40 highway/city driving , with 100% city, it varies between 18 to 20. the worst i ever got was 15.6mpg.

 

My average is about 25 with city and highway. If I drive for long distances on the highway I have seen it has high has 37.4 mpg . That was when I drove about 200miles and going about 75 with cruise control.

So far in this thread, I have seen the sticker mpg referred to twice. There is currently a push by several entities to have a more accurate mpg on new vehicle stickers.

Consumers Report did extensive gas mileage testing with a PT Cruiser. The sticker indicated one should expect to get around 26 mpg in all-around driving (a middle figure between city/highway). CR's tests resulted in an all-around mpg of 17.6. They tested an SUV (Blazer, IIRC), whose sticker indicated an all-around mpg of 18 mpg. CR results were 12.8 mpg.

Such real-world results, plus increasing driver complaints, have reached Capitol Hill, where there is growing sentiment for requiring realistic data on the sticker. With the current energy crisis, I have no doubt this will happen within the next year or two.

I measure my mpg the old-fashioned way - miles driven divided by gallons used. If this is done for around three or four consecutive tanks, the result should be very accurate.

On my '00 SE, I have gotten as high as 31 mpg in leisurely freeway driving. With the same type driving in my '04, I have not yet surpassed 30 mpg on one tank, or 29 mpg on two consecutive tanks.

In fact, I seem to be averaging around 28 driving leisurely and 26 driving around 80 mph on the freeway in my '04. As 'highway' driving is not necessarily all freeway driving, the sticker mpg on the '04 for 'highway' should probably be less than 28, say around 26, and the sticker mpg for city driving should probably be around 19.

But 19 and 26 mpg for the '04/'05 Maxima would still be decent, and nearer the currently posted sticker numbers than most vehicles will be proven to be getting.

 

Currently averaging 23mpg in mostly rush hour traffic. On roadtrips, averaging 65-80mph, I've seen 28-29mpg. Proper inflation of your tires will affect mpg as well.

 

I consistently have 15.6 mph. What are the causes of this? My tires are properly inflated, the air filter is replaced, I have 17k miles, and the oil change is recent. The dealer flushed the radiator and cleaned the throttle. Could the second be the cause of the problem?

I drive on the highways/roads 50/50.

 

hey guys thanks for replying to this thread, i found out that my last tank i got 23.8mpg WOOHOO!! averaging about 30mph on the trip computer... the fuel econ is kinda off though, after everything.. it said i got 16mpg but when i did it the old fashioned way.. it came out to 23mpg.. i should get it checked cuz i hate it when people get in my car and are like damn man only 16mpg?!? where are you in a hurry to? and then i got to explain but anyways thanks for replying..

 

15 thats it. I do mostly city driving. I didn't expect much more because they made the engine bigger. I the that sticker was bull. I think they take those readings in perfect conditions.

In case anyone possibly "did not see" how to do this, hit the MPG button. Then hold it untill *** appears.

next time you refill and manually calculate your MPG, it should be w/in [+/-1MPG]

 

I don't trust the trip computer for obvious reasons... I reset it on ocassion, but I don't rely on it -- hell, you can't even count on it to tell you DTE accurately!

I rely on how often I fill up vs. how much I've driven, and I know I'm in the 19-20 range. I drive 75% highway, FAST (60-80) almost every day... the city driving is just asstastic... maybe 5-15 mph at the most on a good day. I haven't taken any serious trips to see what all highway does, but based on how much I drive and how often I'm at the pump, I know I'm in that range.

 

I'm getting 21.3 and I have 300 miles on mine. Should I expect it to improve once it gets broke in?

 

I hope you all know not to trust the fuel computer for actual mileage. On A33Bs they're usually off by 5mpg. If any of you can honestly get 28mpg that is very impressive.

17.8 mpg. im heavy on the gas from time to time but hey who isent. i dont reset the computer when i get gas, i dont see the point. i get gas every saturday no matter what. its gonna use gas and im gonna need to put it in, dosen't bother me any.

 

My mpg range in between 19-20 85% hwy drving.

The highest I got was 33mpg riding two whole hours at approx. 65mph on a four and half hour trip, according to the computer.

Could that be accurate with the 6spd?

Next time I'll use Lightonthehill's equation and know for sure.

 

The fuel computer is always overly optimistic. Unless you calc your mileage the correct way you don't know what you're really getting.

 

Ok, but if all our fuel computers are the same (they are) than for comparison purposes we have a valid standard of measure. Thats what the threads original quastion was.

 

The sensors that feed them information all vary quite a bit which invalidates any standard of measure. So the end result is that they all are NOT the same.

 

I'm right at 21.3 but that is almost exclusively "city" driving. I don't count 10 miles each way on the expressway during rush hour, when you can quickly go from 70 to a complete stop then back to 70 in just a matter of minutes as "highway" driving. And I'm not very conservative in my driving style either.

 

The fuel economy computer is well off on my Max also. The old fashioned way usually shows me that I am getting around 1.5-2 miles better per gallon than the computer states.

I get 28.5-31 mpg on the highway with a few stops (50-65 mph), 26.5-28 mpg on the interstate (70-85 mph helps if I draft with big-rigs), 16-17.5 mpg in the city. I am not a lead foot either the city part really bites because that is mostly what I do. Very large difference between highway and city. More so than any other car I have had. Either way it is better than my old rides. My 95 Max not very good or my Z-71 that joker got 12.5 in the city 14 on the highway!

Don't rely on the on board gauge for an accurate reading.

Also to note about MPG is the temp outside. The colder it is outside the worse gas mileage you will end up getting. As it has warmed up a little these past few weeks my MPG is up to 20 now driving mostly in the city...but I shouldn't speak so soon....we'll see what happens

 

If thats true, every 6th gen maxima varies quite a bit from the others. Its the same sensor, stop being so ****.
