Aussie 6th Gen Maxima

HI All

Is anybody interested in checking out the Australian version of a Maxima , I am happy to take some pics and post them if you are.

Ours is more like the Teana or Cefiro and made in Japan.

We don't get as many options as you guys but a lot of the gear comes standard like DVD rear screen and headsets and Intell key which is pretty cool.

We only get the 4 speed slush box ,but its one of the best autos I've ever had. 3.5lt engine is the same as yours but it put out 170kw which translates into ??? BHP .. I run mine on 98 octane gas which is good for another 8kw or so..

98 octane gas? Best I've ever seen (at a normal station) is 93. I take it you guys don't start at 87 over there?

Minimum rating is 92 then premium unleaded is 95 and high preformance is 98. A lot of people use the 98 as it runs cleaner and also give you better MPG .. 98 is sold pretty much everywhere.. unless you are in the middle of nowhere which is not hard to do in Aussieland..

We pay about 1.03 per liter for 98 and around 94c for 92 ...

You guys can stop drooling. They obviously don't use the same octane rating system that we use in the states.

Here octane is measure by taking Research Octane plus Motor Octane and dividing the result by 2. This is usually expressed by the formula (R+M)/2 or even R+M/2. If you look closely at our gasoline pumps you will see this formula posted.

The 98 he is talking about is a research octane number only. The oil industry in our country found that the research octane number alone did not tell all you needed to know about the anti-knock properties of gasoline, particularly for fuel injected cars runing unleaded gasoline. Back when we had the big-boat cars, carburators and leaded gasoline we also only used (for advertising purposes) the research octane number, and most premium was at or near 100 octane. 98 would be on the low side of what was sold back then. I would expect this 98 research octane to produce about 92 (R+M)/2 octane (which we in this country now usually just call octane). This is just my guess, as a motor octane test would need to be run on this fuel to determine the exact number.

You could be right , but there is a mighty difference when you fill it up with the good stuff , mind my car has a sticker on the gas tank filler lid put on when manufuctured in Japan which states that the minimum octane rating must be 95 for this engine , do you fellas have the same stipulation on the US motor ?

I'm 65 years old and worked for Amoco Oil (now owned by BP) for 35 years. I worked in the industry when Research Octane was the only number used to sell gasoline. For a typical gasoline, Motor Octane can be 15 or more numbers lower than the comparable Research Octane. (Need to be careful when trying to generalize about octane test results.) Given that it is the same engine in both countries and the advice here is a minimum of 91 (R+M)/2 octane -- I'm certain that I'm right.

The USA is a big country with different conditions. I live at 7,200 feet above sea level and do much of my driving at 6,000 feet above sea level. Given the octane altitude effect of normally aspirated cars, I only burn 85 octane in my Max when I'm at this altitude. You can add about one octane number (R+M)/2 for each 1,000 feet in elevation, so 85 octane acts like 91 octane at sea level. Hope I haven't confused you too much.

I also remember talk in the 80's about how regular gasoline in many other countries was really kind of "junkie" when compared to our regular in this country. Don't know it that was true then or even now. But you comment about really being able to tell the difference with premium may be an indication that it still is the case. In the USA, regular grade accounts for over 80% of the total gasoline volume. Over seas it is much different, with premium being the bigger seller.

There have been a number of threads on this site that argue about whether the 6-Gen Max really needs premium gasoline. Here it seems to be a matter of preference more than proof. I know that if I were racing my Max, I would definitely burn premium. But for normal driving, I rarely use premium. At altitude I use 85 regular. When I head east, the regular goes to 87 octane, which I also burn. In eastern Nebraska I go to 89 octane mid-grade and use that down to sea level. I have put in tanks of premium at all elevations and can not tell any difference in street driving. I also don't seem to get any difference in gasoline mileage between the grades. The strength and direction of the wind (at highway speeds) is a more critical factor for mileage.

I mis-spoke here. I should have said: While Motor Octane test results can be as much as 15 numbers lower than the Research Octane for the same gasoline; it typically is about 10 octane numbers lower. Thus a Research of 98 and a Motor of 88 would result in an (R+M)/2 number of 93 -- which is the highest you normally see in this country. And a Research of 96 and a Motor of 86 would get an (R+M)/2 result of 91 octane -- which is the lowest premium you will typically see here.

Still have 5 more posts to make before the powers that be will let me put up a picture.

One thing that i can attest to is the high speed ablity of the maxima , over here in the Northern Territory at least you can drive a unristricted speeds and I have take the "Max" up to 230km and run for about 20 minutes at around 180-200 and it did miss a beat in fact it seemed to sit flatter on the road ( which addmitedly are excellant) and devoid of a lot of traffic , it being 250km between towns on occassion.

More Details on Gasoline Octane

I've come up with more on gasoline octane. I've put that detailed information on this thread in the fluids section of this site.

I like it from the side, but thats all..because the rest of the car reminds me of other less desirable cars:

Bad:
Headlamps- Ford 500
Wheels- Mercury Sable
Dashboard- Toyota Avalon
Hmmm....

Good:
Rear- Mercedes-Benz S500

-I dig the chrome around the windows, but thats about it...anyone else see this?

why in the world are there acura neck rests on your max? please visit eBay for nismo ones like mine or even nissan.
looks nice, but resembles the Alti even more in the front. rear tails have a Merc flavor.

Nice pick up there on the Acura neck rests , the seller ran out of Nismo ones so i picked these up with the intention of having reupolstered with matching leather to the rest of the interior.. the Acura brand is not sold here so I thought no much of it at the time..

I will post some new pics with the rear wing when it gets added next week.
Also I have had both hi and low beam changed to HID and it make a hugh difference to the lighting. Funny thing is I can go around with both beams on around town and I don't ever get flashed.. & yet its like daylight out the front of the car..

Wow what a difference. I love the dash and the chrome. Thanks for a look at whats available to the rest of the world. As for that Ford 500 ROFL! I test drove that thing before getting my Max because my boss pays for the car and knew the owner of a Ford dealership. My take on that car "junk on wheels".

Curious, how is the dealer/service experience down there? How has your Max held up? Any continuing problems?

Dealer service here is excellant ,have not had any issues since i picked the car up only done 5000km so far but it's going super. A car that never has to see a dealer execpt for service is a good car
