A 6-Speed Performance Upgrade

I just changed the fluid in my 6-speed manual transmission. The difference compared with the original Maxima fluid after 30 K miles is unbelievable. It truely was a performance upgrade. If you have a manual trannie and have at least 15 K miles on your Maxima, I definitely recommend this upgrade. I should have done it much earlier, but thought the reports were just hype. Check out my experience with this fluid change at Post #61 on this thread in the Fluids and Lubes portion of this site:

The site shows you how to do the work yourself. You may also find that a Nissan dealer (if that's were you go for service) will not be willing to put a non-Nissan product in your trannie. Redline MT-90 is the only synthetic trannie fluid I could find that meets all of the specs for our 6-speeds. There is a post on the Fluids & Lubes section that says Amsoil will be bringing back their fluid that previously met all specs for our trannies.

I would not bother with this upgrade if you don't change to synthetic fluid.

I am confused. One person says they put 5 quarts Mobil something of MTF in and another claims 2.5 quarts of Redline? Which quantity is it?

I have the AMSOIL synthetic GL4 in my car, got it from Talkinghorse in the group buy section. Its absoluteley fantastic and meets and exceeds all of our specifications without having the harmful (to our trannies) GL5 additives.

I put in Mobile 12 synthetic and it made a difference in my 6 speed. Shifted much smoother.

Check the stickies. You certainly don't want to use this gear lube for manual trannies in an auto.

When I did my change, Amsoil had not brought back the GL4 product and Talkinghorse would not sell me a product that was close, but not exactly correct for my trannie. I trust him because he was more concerned about me getting the proper spec product than selling me a product he had that was not quite right for my Max.

I made my change to Redline GL4 in May of 2005 with about 34 K miles on my Max (I now have 46 K). I would not call that "recently." At that time there was not even talk about Amsoil bringing back a GL4 fluid.

Check out this Stickie in the Fluids & Lubes section of this site:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=149056

Some on this thread don't know what they are talking about, but bill99gxe knows what he's talking about.

It is hard to get a complete fluid change in an auto-trannie, but in Post #2 Bill discusses a way of getting most of the fluid changed.
