Will you buy another Max?
#284
I've had my '06 Maxima for a few months now (Japanese version), and so far it has been an excellent ride.
Here in Australia the fully loaded Maxima costs $45k (about $34k U.S.), and at that price it's good value compared to local and imported offerings. ATM it's the only large sedan in Australia with a CVT transmision - and when you couple that with the VQ35DE it's a package that's hard to beat!
As long as they keep the design appealing, and load it up with good features and decent power I'll seriously consider getting another one. It'll be interesting to see what the next complete redesign will look like, both for the Japanese and U.S. models.

Interesting that you got CVT and Intelligent key a model year (or more???) before we did.

After I got rid of my 04(had 2 other previous) about a month ago, I was a little sad. Looking at the new G35 and the the lexus is and new gs series, I would only consider buying another max if they made strides to be really elegant. maybe they mever will, but these 3 models are so freakin nice!!!!! Not that the max isnt, but I was really hoping that there would have been more change. Its just the little stuff, like rattles and other little things after you get a few miles on them that I dont like. The new G35 by the way is not ahuge change from the previous model, but my god it is SOOO SOOO nice. I wish they could have changed the max just enough to make it look nicer.

Being that these last forever.......looks like I won't be needing another..hah. But, no clue if I'd buy another one..Maybe if we get a V8 and RWD and even more sportiness and no CVT, and a manual tranny...well then you sold me. If not, I'll stick with beamer (328i/335i) coupes or mercedes (c/e class sedans).

It seems to me that Nissan has someone else in mind other than me with every generation change to the Maxima. I got my 6th gen because I have wanted one for a long time, demanded a new car and ignored some of the drawbacks. Over time I have realized that this car seems like it is made for someone older, possibly more conservative than I am. That's just an opinion though. The latest changes seem to be more of a move in that direction. For example, CVT's are cool but where is the fun with that? I thought the tooth was a bit fugly but the new grill just doesn't seem like an improvement. I really like Nissan cars but why is it that they can't seem to get both the butt and the front end of their cars to look hot. It seems like one end looks great but the other isn't so great. OTOH, the Infiniti badge never seems to suffer from that.
Aside from all of that I can at least say my Max has been extremely reliable and it gets major points for that. I probably won't buy another one though.

Nice car Dennis. I'm sure you will enjoy it. With regard to Nissan, I don’t know what they’re thinking. Since they dropped the manual transmission, and completely eliminated Maxima’s sport identity, it’s just another car. They’re going in the wrong direction with it. Fortunately, they’re going in the right direction with the Altima. And as a Nissan fan, I feel good about that.
Has anyone read Car and Driver’s road test on it? Nissan still knows how to get the job done! The new Altima did away with the crappy tunnel-type gauge package they use on the Maxima and once again use large easy to read gauges. They added three more inches of leg room to the back seat, which now borders on huge. It has a better interior, good looks, a powerful engine, very strong performance (even though it crawled off the line in C&D road test), much less torque-steer, and a smaller turning circle. And for poor-folks like I am, you can get a basic, cloth interior SE model (which once again comes with a true sport suspension) that lists for less than $26,000 (dealer cost less than $24,000). Maxima no. Altima yes.

In regards to buying a new Maxima again, I would have to see an improvement in quality. I have a 2006 SE auto with Driver Preferred. Nice car and LOTS of options. The quality is well below par at least for my particular car.
I just traded in a 2006 Altima SE auto. I put Nismo sways, intake, and exhaust on. The thing hauled a$$ and was a total sleeper. The interior was a little bland yes. The problems I have had with the Maxima are unacceptable in a car that stickers at $33k.
I had to replace two back tires at 1000 miles because they were out of round and caused the car to shake. The floormats were replaced because it looked like a child cut them from the mold with safety scissors and paste. There are paint flaws in several areas of the car, and there are a few rattles here and there. I would understand if this was a brand new model, or an entry level model, but this is what is supposed to be the "Flagship".
I think the Altima that I traded in (and is still on the dealer lot) is a better car and better value.
Just my two cents.
Interesting note to add, my wifes Xterra also has some pretty major paint flaws. My car looks like they painted over a bug on the passenger side handle, and my wifes looks like there was a metal burr or piece of steel that was never sanded/filed down correctly.
That shouldnt be going on in 2006. I would expect that back in the 80's from GM.

Wow this thread has been going on for some time now. I am new round here and this is my first foreign vehicle, so far so good I have no issues with it, 37k on the clock my last 2 vehicles were chryslers, and I am glad to have stepped up to a better grade. (06 Maxima se auto)

im sure there are some in this thread that will be willing to sell theirs to you! My next car will be a 300zx, convertible, 5 spd, and will eventually have the vg30tt for the power supply. I do not plan on getting rid of the max, I just swapped in a 120 actual mile 2000 de-k engine. I have had 2, my dad has had 5. We have 3 at the house right now and a nissan quest. Just a nissan family. Great reliability, look good, ride well, quick, I guess I should mention the 2 I have had and the 3 we have now are all 4th gens...

It seems Nissan will be stearing the newer Maximas away from the sport look and more into eligance.
the articles i read on the web mentions that Altima is going to be Nissan sport sedan and Maxima will be the luxury sedan.
My personal opinion, maybe the new maxima will look similar to the Cat CVT, or Chrys 300.... Bigger, heavier, slower and more expensive...

I think its motor trend tht just has there car of the year issue out....well they review the new altima in there..(it is soo nice and more power than the max) and the last line at the bottom is...."why would anyone buy a maxima anymore?"

Let's forget about the 7th Gen Max for a sec and Nissan's goal to evolve the Max into a more luxury segement:
I bought my '06 6sp brand new only about three months ago. It was a total impulse buy for me. I had a reliable '97 SE w/151K on the ODO, but went to the dealer one day in late August on a whim.
I talked to the sales guy who was really nice and totally non-pressure. He was actually in the middle of another deal and we were talking the difference in the Altima vs. the Maxima. I told him I would like to take a new ('06) Altima out for a spin just for ****s and giggles.
I drove it about 20 miles and it just felt different. I don't know how to explain it.. but it just didn't "feel" like my older Max. Got back to the dealer and said thanks, but I wasn't interested.
He made mention that he had one 6sp on the lot (Silver on black leather, DPP, etc..) and Nissan just put out a $1500 rebate on the '06. I figured I would take that for a spin too, again just for some fun.
Literally, the second we got onto the road, it just made me feel comfortable. Some of it looked and felt like the Altima, sure, but there was something about it that just felt different. I can't explain it. It was just a better car. I don't know why.
Two days later, I wound up driving it off the lot, and haven't regretted my decision yet (well, except for the payment...)

Well, I started this poll many moons ago when I was a "probably not". Its not that I didn't love my Maximas ('01 AE then '04 SE), I was just ready for something different (and I wasn't really into the Altima) I finally traded in the '04 for a '07 G35x (and a '07 Pathfinder). I've had for just one week, and so far its fantastic! I'm curious as to where they will take the next generation of the Maxima... I will always be a fan!

I probably will get another. Great car for the price.
This is my second one as well. I had a 2000 Se and put 166,000 miles on it before trading her in. It ran just a strong as the day I bought it. I am a little dissapointed with the lack of take of power in my 07 SE .

I HIGHLY doubt the max will get to the Chrsyler 300 size.... Then again.... they just might.
But i'm sure the design will be SEXY!!
I can't go from Max to the G, smaller.
If anything, i'd go to the MX or FX.
DEF wanna see the next gen's of those! Along with the 5series, and the TL.
Most likely....i'll trade 2010-11 if i likey!
