Cracked Winshield
Cracked Winshield
So last week when I was washing the car I noticed a little tiny crack on the windsheild where the registration and inspection sticker go. Tonight I was driving home and I noticed that the tiny crack is going halfway across the windsheild. Has anyone else have to change there winsheild on this or any other car? How much did it cost? I am also afraid that when they change the windsheild that they will break the mirror since it has the dimmer. I want to change it at the dealer since they might do the best job. I can't believe this this car can't stay perfect. No matter what something gets ****ed up after the other. Last month Nissan touched up my bumper because the scratched and the car looked beautiful. Now this.
Damn sorry to hear that man. I am very reluctant when it comes to changing windshields, they never seem to get it on right...whether it's the dealer or some 3rd party. Most of the time, the dealer will sublet this kind of work to a subcontracter. You might be better off going to them direct but, make sure to ask them for the OEM factory windshield.
Other than that just make sure that they do a good job and that they don't have the polyurethane oozing out all over the place. Good Luck...

eLMo - If this crack started as a result of the windshield being hit in some manner (road debris, etc), there will be some kind of small mark or pit where it was struck. If this is the case, it could be covered under your 'comprehensive' auto insurance.
But your deductible might make such a claim either meaningless (deductible near or greater than cost of windshield), or a poor move because this could enter into the equation determining your insurance rate at some point. For something in this price range, it is usually better to not involve your insurance company.
If, however, there is no evidence of anything striking the windshield, then this could have happened as a result of either windshield glass that was improperly cured, or, more likely, the windshield was under stress from either improper installation or an imperfect car frame opening in which it was installed. If the crack actually started at the edge of the glass, this is a very strong indication this crack was not the result of the glass being struck.
If this is the case, although your dealer may drag his feet or waffle, or even deny, this should be covered completely under the three year/36K Nissan warranty.

I have had to replace the windshields on two of my government vehicles at work. It ran from 300 to 450...but mind you these were both min-vans (glass probably larger and more expensive).

Had mine replaced. It cost me 175 I believe. I didn't have any problems with the glass itself but I did have to take it back to the guys that repaired it because the chrome molding that runs from the front to the back of the car wasn't secure. When you get it done, make sure you check that molding. My partner had his replaced the guys bent the molding on top. They replaced it but it did happen. Good luck.
if you have glass coverage on your ploicy, shouldn't cost you anything if you go to the insurance company's recommended shop. i had mine replace last december. haven't had any problems. other than in not saying "nissan" on it, you would never know. they will ask (or should) if you have the nav system, because the windshields are different.
I had mine replaced before I ever drove it home, it had a small chip. They sent it to an auto glass shop that they always dealt with so they knew the maxima. That was 10 months ago and I've never had any leaks. But like someone else said, make sure the crome moulding is put back in place correctly.
i thought small chips got filled instead of fully replaced? glass coverage? I'll have to look into that. All I know from other's experience, cheapest is not best for windshields. You have to consider fitment, quality (don't want headaches looking through), and warranty.

I live in California, and with all the traffic, it seems like I had to replace the windsheild on every one of my last 8 vehicles. Don't worry about, it is no big deal. If you do not have glass coverage on your insurance, I suggest you get at least 3 bids. You should notice about a 20% difference in price. I have always had the company come to either my work or home to do the replacement. They should do this at no additional charge. Don't worry about your mirror either.
Good Luck,
Michael

if you have glass coverage they will patch the chip, whetever, if it's not in an area immediately in front of the driver and can be covered by a quarter. otherwise it gets replaced with no deductible.
in my experience you're better off going to the shop. it's a more controlled environment, and in my experience they do a better job especially keeping the interior of the car protected and clean.
note also for the maxima there is a rubber gasket that goes around the opening before the glass is installed. this has to be warmed so it can be stretched, fitted smoothly into place. the shop i went to also heated the glass before installation.
the only glass i have ever had installed outside of a shop was on my sebring convertible and they could never get it sealed to stop the leaks.
just my $0.02

I have a crack too. Mine is a stress crack, happened 3 days ago. The Stealership agrees but is waiting from word by Nissan for the o ahead to replace. They contract out for replacement. I'm a bit hesitant on going through the dealer just because they are jerkoffs. If you look on the passenfer side upper middle left side you can see a line that comes in.

For those of you who had leaks, where did you spot the leaks? I wonder how much a nissan windshield cost. does the chrome molding get ruined when they take it off? i feel like it will get all bent up and ruined.

but if you have $500+ deductible, how could they pay it? get quotes elsewhere and remember it's pointless to notify your insurance if the highest quote for work is close to (especially less) than your deductible.
I went through this same hastle almost a year ago... I was on the interstate and a big rock was kicked up by the truck in front of me and hit my windshield HARD... a couple of hours later, the crack had grown from the bottom of the glass to about a quarter of the way up. Anyway, I called around and I too wanted the OEM glass. A few of the windshield repair places would charge around $200-$215, but not using OEM glass... I called the dealer's body shop and they told me about $500 (I think), and was told that the OEM glass alone is around $400. Anyway, I called my insurance agent to discuss this (we didn't file a claim - just getting some advice on how to get quotes; she is a very nice person). When getting bids, always let them know that you will be paying with cash since they will tend to mark up the price if it is thought that your insurance will be paying (she said that they will often drop their price by 10-25% or so). Also, I looked around the internet (and called a few local dealers) and found that the cost of the OEM glass was like $170 (or atleast that's what I would pay). Armed with this, I called back my dealer's body shop and asked if he could match the other's prices since I would be paying with cash, he originally waffled and I asked how much if he would install if I brought my own glass from the dealer (for $170), and we finally agreed to a reasonable price (but he did screw up some interior pieces, which he replaced...).
I think he actually lost out on that deal after replacing parts that they screwed up, but he's a nice guy and did good work (no leaks), so I've brought my car back for a few paint issues/door dings here and there so all is good now.
Anyway, good luck... I'd say it shouldn't cost more than $250, with OEM glass (maybe a bit less for PPG or something else).

I got a call from my dealer this morning saying that Nissan approved my windshield stress crack and will repair it under warranty. The dealer told me that when the windshield comes in they will need it for the day and that a contractor will come pick the car up and take it to the shop to have it installed. sort of scares me but least its free.
Free Windscreen or Side or Rear
Looks like we have got it over the states for once ..
Nearly every stock or (for a small fee $20 PA) Comp Insurance policy in Australia, gives you a free Windscreen or Side or Rear glass once a year if it's Damaged for whatever reason ....

get glass coverage on your policy. costs next to nothing, and will replace the glass if it's cracked with no deductible.
and why the big deal with oem glass. do you think nissan actually makes the windshield? it's made by one of the nig glass compaanies and they just put the nissan name on it. if you can get the exact same thing cheaper and it doesn't say nissan, what's the big deal. if i covered up the name on mine, you could not tell whether it's nissan or not.

-I think i am w/you on that one Nismo. Geico does blow. If I were to switch over to them before my two accidents, i would have paid three hundred a month compared to the one twenty i was paying.
-But like Nismo says, your better of paying for it outta pocket rather than through your insurance. You just made me call my insurance Co. to reveiw my full policy.

Here's what I negotiated. I have had so many issues with my car that I've built a pretty good relationship with my Nissan Service Manager. I had a cracked winshield also. I got a few quotes from the mobile winshield replacement shops and one from my dealer. The dealer was about $30.00 more than my lowest quote. I told my service manager that I'd give him my business as long as he threw in a detail job on the car. They did a nice job on the windshield and I picked up my car in beautiful condition. The leather seats were even conditioned. Well worth the extra cash, especially since the car was in for other warranty work and they had provided me a rental. Btw, the cost of the windshield replacement on mine was $320.00.
My dad went around yesterday and got a quote for $225.
The reason Geico wouldn't pay for it was that I have a $1000 deductible. I am going to tell my dad today to get the glass coverage since you guys are saying it's cheap. I don't deal with this crap lolol, I just drive the car.
