what speed are you at 3000 rpm?

Just curious if there's any variations among our cars, and if its an indication of any difference in performance or engine health. I just would like to know, with only you (the driver) in the car and not carrying any extra amount of weight, driving under normal conditions on a relatively flat road, what speed are you going when you hit 3000 rpm?

I'm at about 77

Anyone?

By the way, the only other performance mod I have is the frankencar intake.

Your questions are off. Changing the intake or having an additional passenger will not change the Max's top speed in high gear at 3K RPM. The only factors that will change this is the type of trans-axel your Max has -- and whether you have changed the original tire size.

My SE has a 6-speed manual trannie and at 3K RPM in 6th gear the car is going about 82 MPH. I assume the 3K RPM speed of an SE with 5 speed automatic will be somewhat different as will the speed of an SL with a 4-speed automatic (04) or a 5-speed automatic (05).

true... i figured with added weight, the car is going to need a little extra hp to keep the same speed. If its an SL vs SE issue, I've got the 4-spd SL.

The HP output from the engine will not be that different in high gear at 3K RPM. And a slight difference in HP will not change the MPH of your Max. The speed vs RPM of your Max is totally based on the specific gearing (this includes the circumference of the tires).

In my previous car (Olds), I knew that the auto trannie was shot when I was driving at 70 MPH and the engine speed was 2,500 RPM -- it should have been about 2,000 RPM. I was correct, it was slipping and I was able to get to a dealer for repairs before the trannie completely failed.

Cruising at 80mph in 5th gear will put you at 3000rpms (04 SE Auto)

Taking your eyes off the road to worry about stuff like that will put you in a very bad accident.

SilverMax 04 is correct.

The number of passengers, condition of the engine, etc, should have no bearing on this. This is purely a function of the tranny/axle ratio, what gear you are in, and the outer diameter of the tires.

With OEM tires equally inflated and with similar tread depth, all 6th gen SEs with 6 speed manual tranny should be moving the same speed in the same gear at any particular RPM.

With OEM tires equally inflated and with similar tread depth, all 6th gen SEs with 5 speed auto tranny should be moving the same speed in the same gear at any particular RPM.

With OEM tires equally inflated and with similar tread depth, all 6th gen SLs with 4 speed auto tranny should be moving the same speed in the same gear at any particular RPM.

With OEM tires equally inflated and with similar tread depth, all 6th gen SLs with 5 speed auto tranny should be moving the same speed in the same gear at any particular RPM.

Any variation would indicate a tranny slippage problem.

Hummm..

At 3000 RPM I am doing 148 Kph...

Mind our version is a little different and if you have changed your tyres from stock that will put your speedo out a tad ..

I have a Frankincar intake too ...

Mine is over by 3km at 100 KPH. I have gone down to 245 x 45 x 17 ...

A rough calculation of this (100 Kph = 62 MPH; which is a close approximation of the correct factor) shows he is going about 91 to 92 MPH.

I suspect with the smaller tires, his Kph reading is probably off, unless he has changed gears in his speedo.

I get 87-88 MPH at 3000RPM on SE 5speed auto.
But tire size will not change this relationship since the MPH/1000RPM is a factor of the overall gearing of the car.
If you put on bigger diameter tires, your speedometer will still show 87 MPH at 3000RPM but your ACTUAL road speed will be higher than that shown on the speedometer. The only way to get the speedometer to read accurately after putting on oversize tires is to get it electronically recalibrated. I presume that the Max can be recalibrated the same way as several older cars that I have had. Expensive computer test gear is needed to do this (Dealer service)

mailjbrown just made an important (and correct) point.

Changing the tire size will not affect the speedometer reading at 3,000 rpms.

The change in tire size will change the actual speed the car is travelling at a given rpm, not the speedo reading (unless the speedo was recalibrated for the new tire size).
