Inquiry about "Service Engine Soon" light
Inquiry about "Service Engine Soon" light
At about 16000 miles my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. I am assuming it's time for the 15,000 mile maintenance. Being that I always do my own oil changes, and have already done the tire rotation, and purchased the air filter. I am considering doing the in-cabin air filter and myself. I could check the auto-tranny fluid as well.
The only things I cant do is...it says in the manual to lubricate the "propeller shaft".
What is that? And if I do all this stuff myself, how do I reset/turn off the SES light?
Thanks,
haZe

I reset mine because I was stupid enough to remote start the car and drive away in the accesory position. Duh! It caused the SES light to come on and the CAN gave me 2 errors. The info for resetting the SES is on this site just do a search for it. If you think somethings wrong I agree to get it checked.
Mine came on last week at 9600 miles, I took it in to the dealer and dude said it had something to do with the throttle, which has been hesitant at times. "Whatever man, just fix my joint and keep it movin", is what I told the service advisor.

Simple Way To Reset Service Engine Soon or SES light with Code Reader
Our Experience with Resetting SERVICE ENGINE SOON (or SES) light (and error codes P0100) on our 2000 Nissan Maxima :
We had problem with the Mass Air Flow Sensor (error code 0100) on our 2000 Maxima with 60,000 miles now. While we were trying to diagnose and fix the problem (about which we will write later), we were able to make the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light and ECU error code go away by just leaving the Code Reader connected at the slot below the steering column (with the engine on) for a few minutes - the code reader keeps on reading the error code three or four times and then suddenly the SES warning light goes away, and is reset automatically.
There is no need to disconnect the battery or take the car to the dealer for just a reset. We discovered this by accident - when the code reader was left connected and reading for a few minutes, while answering a phone call, and on return, the code and the SES light were no longer there. Since then, we have had chance to repeat this at least five times, SES light goes away after the error code 0100 is read three or four times by the code reader.

The SES light is there to monitor the emission system. You can't just treat it like a slight annoyance. Toyota and Honda have settled lawsuit with the EPA for not turing on the light. The light may indicate from a loose gas cap to a non-working catalyst converter. I had the SES light on my Pathfinder 3 times over the 8 yrs. They were due to water getting into the gas by spraying water into the evaporator recovery tank. I resetted the light myself after putting some gas treatment stuff. My '04SE just had the CAT replaced due to the SES light. I returned a Montero Sport due to a SES light that couldn't be fixed (gas leak), under Lemon law. People who don't know can bring it to a dealer and got ripped big time. They can change a bunch of $$$ sensors, due to wrong diagnostic or just plain ripoffs. They may charge ~$75 to diagnose the problem which you can do it free at Autozone.
i turned my ses light on by starting my car to check for fuel leaks when i hooked up my nitrous kit, i left the maf unhooked, oops, it stayed on for 3 weeks and didnt go off until my first day at the track when i made 6 1/8th mile passes on the 75shot
