Alternator upgrade?

Anyone have any idea where to find a High Output alternator, like about 150 and higher amps for our max? I am getting ready to finish up my stereo install in and wonder if anyone has upgraded there alt yet. My titan had the same amp rating alt with this set-up and I had dimming lights and some good voltage drops on the voltemeter. Thanks

I have not upgraded my alternator, but I understand there are shops that can custom wind alternators for cars with upgraded stereos. Check with your stereo installer.

I am installing my system myself. I am a electrician and also been installing systems for quite some time. Yet I have never messed with alternators. I was sort of hoping there was a direct factory replacement out there. I will get the system finished up tonight hopefully. I will post pics when I'm done. Stock HU, RF 500 rms Amp, Audiobahn 75x4 RMS amp, 2 audiobahn 10" dvc subs at 2 ohm's. Running 2 gauge power wire. I will see where I'm at and maybe add a cap to it.

This is just a recommendation, maybe you should consider upgrading you battery to an Optima Yellow Top power cell and leave the stock alternator???

Product Info:
OPTIMA Yellow Top batteries, featuring SPIRALCELL Technology, are designed for all of your deep cycle needs. It's perfect for people who are serious about sound. OPTIMA's power is cleaner with higher voltage output than conventional batteries. You can play your system louder and longer. And they have a greater cycle life so they can be drained and recharged more often. Plus, they're spill-proof and can withstand 15 times the vibration of ordinary batteries.

Good Luck...

I was looking at them last night. Do you have one installed? I have never used one. They sound promising if no alt is available.

Yes, but I have the Optima Red Top Power Cell with 24K gold plated Marine terminals and custom billet aluminum bracket. I do not have lots of additional electronic add-ons in my ride (police scanner, radar detector).

Not only do I have an Optima Red Top, I also am a firm believer in a good ground wiring kit (Activetuning has a great kit) mine I custom made... I believe all would help you and your OEM alternator will be just fine IMO. Good Luck...

Nice set-up. I can re-ground my batt if need be. I will just try it as is tonight then if I am dimming I will upgrade my grounds. Then if that doesnt get it, I might try the optima yellow top batt. Hopefully that will do it. That batt isnt cheap either! I will have to come up with something good to tell the wifey if I need to go that route!

Thanks chernmax!

Its a gel-cell battery. No liquid acid inside. In case of a roll-over or frontal collision there is nothing to leak out. It is much more safe than a regular lead-acid battery. If you value your family's safety you really owe it to them to buy one.

I have the same setup as chernmax, but I have 2 extra tweeters, a 400Watt 12" woofer and a 1000 watt amp. I have had no problems with this setup. Warren

Also, see rambergs car setup, he has lots of junk in the trunk married to a 1000W amp, plus other electronics and we run identical setups except we installed the ActiveTuning ground wiring kit in his ride, I would definitely go that route first, it's about 50 bucks and you can install it yourself in about 30 minutes with a socket set, the Red Top runs about $139. no need for the bracket because it will mount and secure in the existing battery holder.

Only modification for the battery setup is the negative terminal which I had to extend due too the elbow type OEM one used would not reach.

contact Ohion Generator, or Excessive Amperage. They both will custom build HO alternators. Beware though, there pretty expensive.

I just saw him today and asked about this. He deals with a company that designs upgraded alts. He can give you their info and you can find out, or tell them you're interested.

Various people have gotten all sorts of different results with a grounding kit but the short answer would be that it improves the ground on some of the electrical and mechanical components of your car. This can make your windows roll up and down faster, increase gas mileage, and enable the transmission to shift smoother. Check this thread for more info.

It depends on your needs. The yellow top is designed to be more of a deep-cycle battery. It is recommended for use with power-hungry aftermarket stereo systems. The red top, on the other hand, is designed to provide more starting power.

Ok I'll PM him If I have a problem with the current set-up. I was damn tired after 5 hours on the install today. I have some tweaking to do yet. I'll let you know how it goes.

Yellow top is better than red, however blue is better than yellow (because it is a Marine Battery). Look above at the #5 thread, I included a link to the Optima Battery Web site, too much info than I care to type for my age... Good Luck...
