The ghost in the machine

Ok I have been having a weird occurance while driving my max. it appears that every time that I go down a hill the rpm's just decide to rev up to like 4000. I can apply the brakes and it will still rev. What is up with that? Anyone else have this issue or is it just me and my imagination?

Its like a hill descent assist where the trans downshifts to keep the speed under control.

What RedBlackMaxSL said.

I have noticed the the 6th gen downshifts on a downgrade more quickly, and with less 'encouragement', than any of my previous Maximas. By dropping to a lower gear, the tranny enables use of engine compression to help slow the car.

If I am continuing to keep the gas pedal down, this seldom happens. But if I lift completely off the gas on a downslope, bingo . . lower gear. Sometimes with a rather sudden and quite noticable decelleration (less diplomatic folks might use the term 'jerk').

I personally like this, as it often saves me the trouble (and wear and tear) of braking. I can also understand there would be folks who have never driven a car that does this, and are not thrilled with it.

I noticed this trait in each of the '04 Maximas I test drove, and saw it mentioned here a few times a year or more ago.

Buy a 6-speed and you can control all that the trannie does at all times. No surprises. And you can start in 2nd gear in the snow to help reduce wheel spin. It is a thinking man's transmission -- you can't go to sleep and let the auto trannie make all of the decisions.

thanks for the insight. I have a long commute sometimes so I am done buying manual shift cars unless I get my hands on a z06 or something like that. Besides I have 2 small kids that some times need to police and I don't want to worry about having shift while I an attending to them. I am just glad to hear that there is nothing wrong with the max.

Kublkmax:

How fast are you going and how big is the hill? I feel mine downshift while going down a hill, but nothing like 4000 rpm.

Does it happen when in manualmatic and D?
